If I can imagine one more afternoon I could have spent engaging or persuading does that mean I could have done more? I have spent afternoons playing with my children. That seemed right and good and yet...
What do we do with a horror of this magnitude?
I mean it's just messy and horrible. I am no doomer, the answer to "what comes next?" is always to do what is right with the day that is at hand. And also the collective is composed of individuals.
I honestly don't have a clear idea of how we are supposed to feel when we have done all we could and the thing has still happened. I suspect that some part of us will always believe that we could have done one thing more and also that that is not always a helpful part of us.

I'm not sure how you can be against removing this man from office right now. What will it take? A nuke being dropped? It's too late then. The purpose of impeachment and the 25th Amendment is to prevent that type of thing from happening, not just to react to it.
