"Trump says he is strongly considering pulling out of Nato - Telegraph report Donald Trump is strongly considering pulling the US out of Nato, according to an interview he gave to the Telegraph. The newspaper says Trump called the alliance a "paper tiger" and claimed the UK does not have a navy. Asked if he would reconsider the US's membership of the alliance after the conflict in the Middle East, Trump said: “Oh yes, I would say [it’s] beyond reconsideration... “I was never swayed by Nato. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way.”"
As many others have pointed out, Trump invariably refers to NATO as 'they' and 'them', never as 'we' or 'us'.

President Trump said that other countries should guard the Strait of Hormuz, calling on Japan, France, South Korea and China to take up the task.
Maybe giving this speech was a bad call. (And who wrote this mess?) Trump is clearly lost; admitting it to the rest of the world is a bad idea.

Doubt it will fracture the GOP when nothing else has. Ironically they might kick up a fuss because it's a treaty, but as @jimgoldgeier.bsky.social and I wrote during the 2024 election, as commander-in-chief he can withdraw US troops and gut NATO in all but name. www.brookings.edu/articles/nat...
Spread the word. I've had the privilege of working for @cergrant.bsky.social, @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social's founding director, for 13 years. After 28 years in charge, he will step down at the end of the year. It will take someone with outstanding qualities to replace him. Details on our website.

I think this is a remarkable development, even if it comes with substantial budget cuts (which probably means more reliance on voluntary contribution, more secondment, or less activities). I’m curious to read the final budget documents once they are out.
Hostilities in the Middle East have served as an unwelcome reminder that the region is not just crucial to the global supply of oil and gas, but a vital conduit for the world’s airline passengers econ.st/4lSUhe9
American Presidents invariably claim that the use of U.S. military force abroad benefits the local population. U.S. Presidents often explicitly or implicitly claim that "the intervened population" therefore welcomes U.S. military intervention - a powerful moral claim.

This paper by @proftalmadge.bsky.social is extremely prescient, and highlights how many of the challenges we're bumbling into were already well understood by those paying close attention in 2008

This is more funny than the author knows because ”to be out and biking” is a Swedish idiom meaning that you’ve totally misunderstood something.
Apart from the catchy headline, many very good points in the text by Stephen M. Walt. Worth your while.

I’m back with another Reading Russia Weekend Extra. In this edition: what the Russian papers have been saying about the talks in Abu Dhabi and the Olympics in Milan-Cortina, plus memories of a Nato chief visiting Moscow 25 years ago. #ReadingRussia

I keep returning to one passage from Trump’s Davos speech. “You need ownership to defend something,” he said. “You can’t defend it on a lease. Who the hell wants to defend a licence agreement, or a lease?”
Taken seriously, this logic is devastating. 1/4
