This literally presented the idea of not wasting extra floss for the part that has to wrap around your fingers by HAVING A STRING OF FLOSS THAT YOU KEEP AND USE OVER MULTIPLE DAYS 🤮🤮🤮

this is basically a big chunk of the work I've been doing in reporting form across years and wow, i've never seen anything more perfect from *that* very specific perspective: frame it, put it in a museum.

My personal opinion is that the goal of this project was not destroy NEH.

It was to punish and demoralize federal workers and award recipients.

And it was to free up money in order to convert the agency, which has bipartisan support, from an intellectual institution to a propaganda machine.

STATEMENT FROM MATT MOBERG, CHAPLAIN OF THE
MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES

IF YOU'RE A CHURCH POSTING
PRAYERS FOR PEACE AND UNITY TODAY
WHILE MY CITY BLEEDS IN THE STREET.
MISS ME WITH THAT SOFTNESS
YOU ONLY WEAR
WHEN IT COSTS YOU NOTHING.

DON'T DRESS AVOIDANCE UP AS HOLINESS.

DON'T CALL SILENCE "PEACEMAKING."

DON'T LIGHT A CANDLE AND THINK IT SUBSTITUTES FOR SHOWING UP.

TONIGHT AN ICE AGENT TOOK A PHOTO OF ME NEXT TO MY CAR,
LOOKED ME IN THE EYE AND TOLD ME,
"WE'LL BE SEEING YOU SOON."

NOT METAPHOR.
NOT HYPERBOLE.
A THREAT DRESSED UP IN A BADGE AND A PAYCHECK.

PEACE ISN'T WHAT YOU ASK FOR WHEN THE BOOT IS ALREADY ON SOMEONE'S NECK.
PEACE IS WHAT THE POWERFUL ASK FOR WHEN THEY DON'T WANT TO BE INTERRUPTED.

UNITY ISN'T NEUTRAL.
UNITY THAT REFUSES TO NAME VIOLENCE
IS JUST LOYALTY TO THE ONES HOLDING THE WEAPONS.

STOP USING SCRIPTURE LIKE CHLOROFORM.
STOP CALLING YOUR FEAR "WISDOM."
STOP PRETENDING JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED BECAUSE HE PREACHED GOOD VIBES AND PERSONAL GROWTH.

YOU DON'T GET TO QUOTE SCRIPTURE
LIKE A LULLABY,
WHILE INJUSTICE STAYS WIDE AWAKE.

YOU DON'T GET TO ASK GOD TO
"HEAL THE LAND"
IF YOU WON'T EVEN LOOK AT THE WOUND.

THERE IS A KIND OF PEACE THAT ONLY EXISTS
BECAUSE IT REFUSES TO TELL THE TRUTH.

THAT PEACE IS A LIE. AND LIES DON'T GROW ANYTHING WORTH SAVING.

THE SCRIPTURES YOU LOVE WEREN'T WRITTEN TO KEEP THINGS CALM.
THEY WERE WRITTEN TO SET THINGS RIGHT.
AND SOMETIMES THE MOST FAITHFUL THING YOU CAN DO IS STOP PRAYING AROUND THE PAIN AND START STANDING INSIDE IT.

IF THAT MAKES YOU UNCOMFORTABLE-GOOD.

GROWTH ALWAYS IS.

The People vs. ICE Renee Good’s death galvanized a city eager to push back against Trump’s invasion.

I wrote about Minneapolis.

there's a self-protective instinct that causes so many people to defend the state in moments of terror. it's so much easier to think renee good had nefarious intentions — or even made an unfortunate mistake — than it is to think "they will kill without reason, and they would kill me too."

As we, the good people of America, remember J6 with horror and sadness, spare a thought for the residents of the city it happened in.

DC is often overlooked as a place where folks live, but this trauma happened to us, on our streets, in the place we call home.

THIS is what makes my head spin: The president is not a moral figure in any idiom, any land, any culture, any subculture. I'm not talking about the liberal enlightenment that would make him want the country to take care of the poor and sick. I mean he has no
Republican values either. He has no honor among thieves, no cosa nostra loyalty, no Southern code against cheating or lying, none of the openness of New York, rectitude of Boston, expressiveness and kindness of California, no evangelical family values, no Protestant work ethic. No Catholic moral seriousness, no sense of contrition or gratitude. No Jewish moral and intellectual precision, sense of history.
He doesn't care about the life of the mind
OR the life of the senses. He is not mandarin, not committed to inquiry or justice, not hospitable. He is not proper.
He is not a bon vivant who loves to eat, drink, laugh. There's nothing he would die for - not American values, obviously, but not the land of Russia or his wife or young

son. He has some hollow success creeds from Norman Vincent Peale, but Peale was obsessed with fair-dealing and a Presbyterian pastor; Trump has no fairness or piety. He's not sentimental; no affection for dogs or babies. No love for mothers, "the common man"" veterans. He has no sense of military valor, and is openly a coward about war. He would have sorely lacked the pagan beauty and capacity to fight required in ancient Greece. He doesn't care about his wife or wives; he is a philanderer but he's not a romantic hero with great love for women and sex. He commands loyalty and labor from his children not because he loves them, even; he seems almost to hate them
— and if one of them slipped it would be terrifying. He does no philanthropy. He doesn't - in a more secular key - even seem to have a sense of his enlightened self-interest enough to shake Angela Merkel's hand. Doesn't even affect a love for the arts, like most rich New Yorkers. He doesn't live and die by aesthetics and health practices like some fascists; he's

"These days, I stress that close reading is not magic. Its power lies in argument: always vulnerable, nothing simpler and yet nothing harder. And to clarify my stakes: the way that close reading is powerful is that it lays claim to power."

I came to your essay via Anne Helen Petersen's newsletter and it is so, so beautiful. I'm not an English prof anymore but I still believe so strongly in close reading: in noticing, taking the interpretive leap, building an argument - and the broader social value of the effort. Thank you

Black Actresses Are Carrying One Battle After Another Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, and Regina Hall propel the film’s most conflicted ideas, for better and worse.

“The Black women of the film are lightning rods for the most forceful conversations the film can bear, and it’s thrilling to watch them embody what Anderson’s script can only loosely hold.” www.vulture.com/article/blac...

A movie that takes place where you're from

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

Of all my posts, this is the one that I wish would be shared widely. I hope people will donate to Bryan's legal defense, but even if you don't, it's important to be aware of the human rights horrors that are going on around us on a daily basis.

You can tell how much money is tied up in chatbots because it's getting the kind of fearful leeway even as it demonstrably causes the deaths of children that we normally only allow for guns

It's amazing in its own right, but my favorite story about The Age of Innocence is that reading it in a lit class directly resulted in two broken engagements at my evangelical college
