"Rich people can take advantage of universal programs"

Good. Like legit, good. They are going to have to foot more of the bill for them than a lot of us (if we are actually going to pay for these things) and honestly actively participating in more and not less of society is something they need

My entire feed is awash with people complaining that Avi Lewis isn’t perfect, that protests don’t do anything, that general strikes and economic strikes aren’t possible. I’m sorry to tell you but if we want to defeat fascism and build a better world, we may have to experience minor inconvenience!

Refried beans, quinoa and cheese burger experiment.

Refried beans, quinoa and cheese burger experiment.

It may not look too tasty, but this is the first iteration of a really good veggie burger recipe. Refried beans, quinoa and cheddar. Needs some veggies like carrots, but I’m happy with this start.

It’s amazing how angry people are that a progressive who isn’t keen on destroying the planet with more oil won the NDP leadership.

Paris said au revoir to cars. Air pollution maps reveal a dramatic change. Air pollution fell substantially as the city restricted car traffic and made way for parks and bike lanes.

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.”

Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life.

Common sense.

Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.

The actual story is that a lack of taxation on corporations means it’s more rational to do stock buybacks and stock dividends than to reinvest in the businesses. Raise taxes on corpos so that it’s more rational to invest in the business. Capital expenses reduce taxable income for the corporations

Ontario to introduce bill exempting Premier, cabinet from FOI requests Government’s proposed changes follow its loss of court battle over call logs for Ford’s personal cellphone

I am begging my fellow Canadians to take a break for a second from obsessing about American corruption to focus on our home grown versions.

Ford is a corrupt crony goon who has done countless shady backroom deals. He wants to remove one of our most powerful tools to hold him accountable. Fuck that!

How long do electric vehicle batteries actually last? When the modern electric vehicle was still in its infancy, drivers worried that vehicles would need expensive battery replacements within a few years. But battery lifespans are exceeding expectations.

“Thomas McVeigh, of Ontario, Canada, drives a 2014 BMW i3. That vehicle didn't have an impressive range even when it was new, and now it can only manage about 55 miles on a single charge in the winter. But it still looks great. It's pleasant to drive. It saves him on gas...” <= is me. 😉

Seeing several people chatting about planting more veg this year ahead of possible shortages due to WW3.

While I've spent the afternoon researching canabalism.

I should point out these two things are not related.

Yet.

Using detailed address-level microdata, we trace movement chains originating with
the initial residents of The Central and document three main findings. First, we show
the building generated a substantial number of local vacancies. We identify 180 specific
addresses that became vacant because of moves into The Central. Scaling to account
for data coverage suggests the new tower induced more than 500 local vacancies in
the three years after construction, by setting off chains of moves. Second, while The
Central units were expensive on a per-square-foot basis, the homes vacated by movers
were significantly cheaper. Homes left behind by those moving into The Central were
about 40% less expensive. Unlike much of the prior literature, which track the changing
neighborhood characteristics of movers

Even more evidence that building new housing decreases rents: Researchers tracked the residents of a newly built luxury condo building and found that they freed up less expensive apartments nearby.
