So if you’re like me you’re just mulling this over while waiting for a post-credit scene to reveal a new character for a sequel, but my kids tapped out after a mid-credits reminder of the inevitability of death, so that’s good.

The downside is that they can’t quite pull off a touching moment that should be the climax of this film, and again my guess is they didn’t want to have to figure out how to make a complex emotional dialogue work globally, so they just kind of skip it.

I’ve probably watched the previous movie 10 times at this point. I’m a sucker for the nostalgia bait, and this film manages to find more of that while focusing on making every moment memeable, if not always memorable.

I think the best thing this film does is fight choreography. There are some inspired battles in this, and you couldn’t move Mario and Luigi like that in their games, so that’s all on the Illumination crew.

A villain from a classic game is introduced, and it seems like he’s going to show up again in the finale. Spoiler: he doesn’t.

A lot of scenes are missing any kind of establishing or transitional shot. It feels like they spliced together a bunch of TikToks. Bear in mind, some of those TikToks are really good, it just doesn’t all hold together.

Went with the family to watch the new Mario movie today. There’s no Galaxy in which I wouldn’t like this style of film, but even I noticed that they seem allergic to dialogue. It’s like they’re trying to minimize the work of the translators to every language on the planet.
