Great episode Ari. I learned a lot. Thanks for all you’re doing!

I disagree.

IMO being a IOU CEO is the hardest job in energy. It’s basically impossible to do well, and when you mess up it kills people and causes $Bs of damage.

Plus, the job itself really sucks. Everyone just yells at you constantly.

That’s why getting good people costs $$$$

How data centers and the energy sector can sate AI’s hunger for power The growth of data centers and AI rely on the availability of electric power. Opportunities for investors in power infrastructure and adjacent sectors are quickly emerging.

…fundamental problem is that total demand for NG gen exceeds supply.

If we can build ~50 GW of new NG capacity in total over the next 5 years, but a big portion of that is going to non-AI use cases, we’re clearly short supply.

In that world, nothing is obvious.

How many GWs of gas generation capacity do you think we can bring online in the US over the next 5 years? Realistically.

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

I think gas engines will play a role too. Not debating that.

But we’re talking about 100+ GW of new demand wanting to come online in the next 5 years.

We don’t have the supply chains to build 100+ GW of NG generation. Hence the problem.

Fair enough, you found someone.

Why doesn’t really matter in the context of your argument.

The fact that they are sold out and we don’t have the capacity to make more fast enough is the issue.

I’ve yet to meet anyone interested in expanding turbine manufacturing capacity in this economy, so where are they going to come from?

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

It’s not obviously correct when the lead time for turbines is 6 years and almost no one wants to invest in more turbine manufacturing capacity.

I’m not disagreeing that NG plays a big role. But nothing is obvious when it comes to scaling AI compute.

The Climate Crisis Is Breaking Insurance Podcast Episode · A Matter of Degrees · 04/04/2025 · 36m

Direct consequence of pretending climate change doesn’t exist = the home insurance industry is collapsing -> millions across the US (regardless of political party) will not be able to get a mortgage.

The view from inside DC, with Rep. Sean Casten Podcast Episode · Volts · 04/02/2025 · 1h 11m

Incredible interview.

@casten.house.gov is 1 of, if not the, best members of Congress on #energytransition issues. He is the type of leader we need if we’re going to figure this whole thing out. Every time I listen to him speak I get smarter. Worth the time.

The Pocket Picking Machine Organized Money · Episode

This episode of Organized Money is wild.

Apparently a key driver of IOU rate inflation is the use of a very obscure modeling methodology to calculate ROE, that isnt used anywhere else in finance.

Can someone explain to me how this is real or why it’s not?

In the spring of 2002 I went to a Yankees game in NYC wearing my military uniform.

I saw very little of the game because almost every single fan in the concourse stopped to thank me for my service, and promised that we would #neverforget.

20 years is a long time.

I’m so sorry brother.

Disrespectful and embarrassing.

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012.

Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place.

A thread.

I don’t know much about Swiss electric system.

Most of California’s electricity grid is outdated. For example, the c hook that broke and caused the Camp Fire in 2018 was 100 years old.

Old electric grid + drought is really bad combination.

1 year ago 1 0 1 0

There is no safe way to operate the electric grid in California during high winds/red flag conditions.

The only near term solution is much more aggressive use of Public Safety Power Shutoffs.

Californians need to prepare for multiple days/year without power.

That’s the inevitable outcome.

FWIW it definitely doesn’t feel like “we’re all in this together” here in SoCal

Really proud of our progress in Year 6.

Year 7 is off to the worst start imagineable.

My great hope is that this tragedy will create the sense of urgency needed to make progress faster.

Google’s new data center model signals a massive market shift | Latitude Media The partnership with Intersect Power and TPG Rise Climate shows how “energy-first” development models can support data centers.

My piece on Google's new partnership with Intersect Power. It isn't just another data center deal - it's a signal that the whole model of data center development is changing. Companies are now going where the power is abundant and bringing the fiber to them. bit.ly/4g8hfu1 #energysky

really important point. The inevitability of DER deployment doesn’t ensure it will happen equitably, status quo it won’t. Better regulation/legislation is needed.

Agree. Lots of people working hard to accelerate ASAP. Political volatility in US not super helpful.
