Dr. Meyer shares that he is looking forward to assessing potential therapeutic strategies to optimize glial cells into curative roles!
Highest elevations of [18F]FEPPA were seen in participants with anorexia nervosa compared to healthy controls. They also observed an inverse correlation between [18F]FEPPA in the brain and levels of S100A8 in blood (serum), which may indicate a shift towards a "less helpful" form of inflammation.
Dr. Meyer also studies anorexia nervosa. Translocator protein ([18F]FEPPA) PET imaging can be used to study inflammation levels - greater TSPO levels are observed in activated microglia (resident immune cells in the brain) and astrocytes.
Importantly, oral tryptophan doesn't change breast milk levels of tryptophan or tyrosine.
Dr. Meyer identified a dietary intervention, "Blues Away", that includes tryptophan, tyrosine, and blueberry extract. A randomized control trial showed that Blues Away was effective to reduce depressive symptoms (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale scores) up to 6 months postpartum.
What is postpartum blues? It's a common syndrome that occurs in up to 80% of women. It typically starts around day 3 and decreases over several days to a week. However, when severe, postpartum blues is associated with 4x greater risk of postpartum depression.

What about intergenerational transmission of affective disorders? To study this, mice experienced adolescent chronic predator stress (or control), then later, pregnancy. Early stress did not affect breeding success but reduced maternal care, resulting in more anxiety-like behaviour in the offspring!
They found that both early and late adolescent stress increased anxiety-like behaviours in adults but did not affect traditional tests of depressive-like behaviours. Late adolescent stress seemed to be more impactful 🤔 From this data, they saw that most effects were not sex-dependent.
Dr. Franklin's lab uses a mouse model to study predatory stress, which is a pure psychological stressor. They wanted to characterize the effects of a repeated (chronic) predator stress paradigm during the early vs late adolescence period.
Adolescence is a unique period of transition marked by hormonal changes and brain development. For example, there is extensive synaptic pruning during puberty 🧠 There are also differences in the stress response in adolescents versus adults ⚡
Follow along for highlights from Dr. Tamara Franklin's talk on "The Direct and Intergenerational Consequences of Adolescent Stress" 👏
