Next Saturday, 21 March at 10:30am, Stephen Kay (BSR Archaeology Manager), Sara Fabbri (BSR Archaeology Survey Technician) and Elena Pomar (BSR Geophysics Researcher) will take part in the annual Furfo Project public conference in Barisciano (L’Aquila).
Working in oasis-based and mobile or semi-mobile weaving contexts allowed her to assess how domestic space, landscape and movement shape textile production and knowledge transmission.

The next episode of #DiggingForBritain is tonight and features Antiquity authors Benjamin W. Roberts & R. Alan Williams on their excavations of the Bronze Age tin trade at St. Michael's Mount!
Can't wait? They wrote on their findings in an #AntiquityBlog 🏺 www.cambridge.org/core/blog/20...
A close-up photo of a Roman tile, featuring a clearly imprinted footprint of a small child's right foo. The tiles shows a rough, broken edge on the left and top, with the detailed five-toed impression visible on the worn surface against a neutral gray background.
A child’s footprint frozen in time - pressed into a #Roman tile as it dried before firing nearly 1,800 years ago.
A tiny, timeless reminder of everyday life in the ancient world.

A Blue Tit is perched on a branch, fluffed up into a perfect little ball with its head tucked deep into its feathers, fully committed to ignoring the outside world. Its soft blue, yellow, and green plumage looks extra cosy, and its tiny claws cling to the branch as if refusing to face the day and determined not to budge...giving off strong “nope, not today” vibes.
Me, pretending Monday isn’t happening...

A Blue Tit sits in a moss-lined bird bath, its yellow and blue plumage soaked and fluffed up from an enthusiastic splash. Droplets of water scatter into the air, catching the light like tiny stars...capturing a moment of pure joy in nature.
Just 2 days to go until the #BigGardenBirdwatch kicks off!
Bold Blue Tits ranked 2nd in last year's results... could they take the top spot this time? 💙

A black background decorated with gold illustrations of branches, stars, swords, ravens, and tiny ghost shapes. In the centre, bold text reads: “BIRDS BUT THEY GET SPOOKIER EACH TIME.” Two ravens perch on bare branches at the bottom, with candles glowing beside them.
Birds but they get spookier each time. 🎃👻

Also some foraminifera observed in the SEM photos!
#FossilFriday: Take a look at these microfossils (foraminifera, mostly globigerinid) that we find in early #Neolithic Għar Dalam ceramics in #Malta!

I always said I'd never pass the life in the UK test if they asked me to make tea properly... But the pub maybe I could pass 😉
Poster for the walk. The text reads ‘discover fossils, stone and astronomy in the city of London! The Monument, the Moon and Malta: urban geology on Eastcheap. Meet at 14.30, Monument Station, Fish Street Hill.’ The background image shows a photo of the Malta War Memorial, a block of squared stone with attached black plaques with maps of the Mediterranean and a description of the siege of Malta during World War II.
My final #urbangeology walk for this year will take place on 4 October. Reservations and more information on #LondonWalks website at www.walks.com/our-walks/th.... Hope to see you there, this is my favourite walk!
Some recent views of the lovely geology of the south coast of Gozo. Lovely limestone. ❤
Someone said this to my face (“but not like you”), then started giving me the numbers for immigrants entering the UK every year and the non-British UK residents… and I was like, “well yeah, I am part of those numbers -.-”
Important new paper on early Neolithic pottery in Malta. Congrats to the authors. www.degruyterbrill.com/document/doi...
We gratefully acknowledge the support of our funders, colleagues, the DMME (University of Malta), students, and heritage institutions and authorities (HM, SCH) who provided authorisation, access to collections and equipment.

We also discussed the challenges in dating the Għar Dalam and Skorba phases ⏳🏺
➡ Overlaps, residual material & site redeposition complicate the picture
➡ Raises questions about how these facies relate, and their connections with Sicilian traditions
Using petrography, XRD and SEM-EDX, we: 🔹 Identified 3 main fabric groups for each phase 🔹 Documented differences in temper & firing regimes 🔹 Proposed that all raw materials were locally sourced (no imports!)
We focused on pottery from Skorba (Malta) & Santa Verna (Gozo).
This paper provides a systematic fabric classification for the Għar Dalam and Skorba phases 🏺 — a foundation for future comparative work in the Maltese Islands and central Mediterranean.
