first time really tuning into a war? welcome. Let’s go over some rules of how to behave.
These are going to be especially important if it’s a war you oppose.
1. You are allowed an opinion. This is America. Whether you served or not. It’s done in your name so might as well speak up.

Great account of the 1866 confrontation, @pptsapper.bsky.social. I only wish it included that when Johnson confronted Grant at the cabinet meeting, and Grant refused, Johnson appealed to the Attorney General, who judged that the President has no authority to give the military non-military orders.

NIFC map view of the Pomas fire.
Spotted a fire headed to Seattle today, had to look it up on the NIFC map. I’ve got a lot of respect for wildland firefighters after reading Young Men and Fire and keeping an eye on fires while at Army North for a few years.
Patrick “Patty” O’Rorke, the top graduate of West Point’s class of 1861, was killed in action on July 2, 1863, while leading the 140th New York Infantry to save the Union position on Little Round Top. He was 26 years old.
I enjoyed reading this article on retrograde with helpful examples from Bataan, Long Island, and up the James River here in Virginia. www.armyupress.army.mil/Journals/Mil...

Come on Sooners. Can’t play cute with the squids, have to crush them early.

Happy Monday! There is at least one thing I do consistently.
The Army team is looking good on ABC on a Friday night!
Beat Tulane.
Rough game for the Black Knights of the Hudson. Hope they heal up and beat UTSA on Saturday. Go Army!
Hoping for a turnaround but the aggressive of Notre Dame is clear in this game. I’ve seen Army take Oklahoma and Michigan to overtime…that was because neither of those teams seemed to take Army seriously.
Books on Notre Dame and Army football history.
All this to say I’m excited for tonight’s Army-Notre Dame game at Yankee Stadium as it is a throwback to college football of old. Both teams are having great seasons and I expect a good game. Go Army, Beat Notre Dame!
The Corps of Cadets on the field before the Army-Navy football game.
3) Army: graduation leads to a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. Division I athletics teams at the Academy are known as the Army Black Knights and have been playing football since 1890. Army-Navy games involve the Military Academy vs the Naval Academy.

2) West Point: refers to the physical geography, high above the Hudson River in New York. First occupied during the Revolutionary War to prevent the British Navy from joining forces coming South from Canada.

1) The United States Military Academy: a 4-year college with a strong core curriculum in science and humanities. It regularly ranks high in the national college rankings and the cost of attendance is covered by the US Government.
Back in the day when I volunteered as a West Point recruiter (hope to again once I retire), I’d describe three ways folks think about it:
The U.S. Army is training in Finland with 27 other nations for Dynamic Front, a 20-day exercise that spans NATO's eastern flank with Russia.

graph showing that federal employees as percentage of population has been declining
Maybe its ok to cut 75% of federal employees because there are so many of them? No.
We have about the same number of feds as we had in the 1960s. As a percentage of the population, they are at historical lows. (We actually need more employees, esp. younger employees, but good luck recruiting them).
Georgetown basketball is regularly disappointing…so was Army football for a long time.
Took a break from reading about misinformation for a sea story. This was a quick read and a good reminder that wars often cost more in lives and treasure than expected. Also humans are tough and good order and discipline can dissolve pretty quick in the wild.
First post! Hoping to quit using Twitter. We shall see how it goes.
