Larissa Waters asks former Treasury chief Ken Henry if it’s too simplistic to say wartime gas profits from the war on Iran can either go to Australians, or to overseas investors & shareholders.
Henry “That’s not simplistic, that’s how it is!” “It is as simple as that.” 💥 #auspol

New Australia Institute research shows that the Japanese Government makes more revenue taxing Australian gas than the Australian Government!
"They're taxing our gas. There's no reason we can't."

Don't believe the empty threats from the gas industry that they'll leave if Australia taxes its gas exports properly.
Inpex are looking to invest RIGHT NOW in high-taxing Norway. They're taking the piss.

"The price of gas paid by Japan will not increase when we impose this tax."
"The profits made by the people selling the gas will fall."

Australia (Australian Capital Territory): ACT Greens (GRN, Green) leader Shane Rattenbury is retiring from politics. First elected in 2008, he is the world's first Greens Speaker and led the party in coalition with Labor from 2012–2024.

Generation from fossil fuels has occasionally fallen y-o-y in the past, but this is the first time it was due to the shift towards clean power, rather than economic crises or other events
Record solar generation was key, increasing 30% y-o-y to meet 75% of global electricity demand growth alone
Renewable energy overtook coal in 2025 to become the world’s largest source of electricity, according to @ember-energy.org
Together with other clean energy sources, renewables helped push fossil fuel generation into structural decline last year – falling by 0.2%
So basically it's becoming less of a story of forcing out fossil exports and more of a story of how to get the most of out of the industry on its way down: how to force them to pay their way, clean up, pay for impacts of fuel use etc
If Australia wants to see Norway-style tax benefits? Last chance.
a cahrt showing exports vs projections
Some other things I would've mentioned if it had come up
The Dec 2025 quarter for gas exports was the **first time** in five years Australia's gas exports were lower than every single prior projection for that quarter.
That + the new Ember / IEA reports show Asian gas demand is not forever......
You will not believe what I've just seen. Hundreds of turtles stuck in the mud of a wetland in NSW that should be full of water and teeming with life. And a small dedicated team of scientists doing their best to rescue them. This is happening right now!
Dr Richard Denniss dismantles the gas industry’s favorite threat.
If taxes kill investment, why is the gas industry rushing to Norway to pay 78%? 🙄
“They are playing us for fools.” 🔥
Nationals’ Susan McDonald has no rebuttal & scrambles to change the subject. #auspol
“Japan, a country with no gas, oil or coal reserves of its own collected almost $40 billion over the last five years while the Australian PRRT provided only $7 billion to Australians,” says Dr Richard Denniss, co-CEO of The Australia Institute. #auspol
Funny how the law and order guys never think it applies to them 🙄
He’s again blaming the courts, the protesters and those attacked by police all for his appalling and illegal attempts to ban dissent

An independent just won the by-election for Newcastle Mayor. Greens second and Labour a distant third.
Ex NBN News Presenter Gavin Morris takes over from another Independent who had to resign for serious health reasons. This shows structural change.
Big changes in a Labor stronghold.
When one human that is identifiable, like a doctor, has to make a decision… that decision is based on the normal social contract that we don’t aim to cause harm… or there may be rapid repercussions.
An algorithm? No such problem.
This reminds me of those stories where they don’t tell the firing squad which of them is actually firing a bullet…
A way to kill at arms length.

This is excellent. Farnsy flashmob in Brisbane in response to new Queensland hate speech laws which outlaw the phrase ‘From the river to the sea’.
There was a Farnsey flash mob in Brisbane. 400 people, many in outrageous wigs, dancing to Two Strong Hearts.
Australian protest larikinism at its best. Warms the cockles of my ❤️ 💚
NSW Greens MP Sue Higginson said the ruling raised serious questions...
“What we saw was police brutality on a scale we have not seen for decades in this state”
“I hold Chris Minns responsible for that violence because it was his unconstitutional laws upon which the police acted.” #NSWpol #auspol

Breaking: New study using observational constraints projects that the Atlantic Ocean circulation #AMOC will weaken ~50% by 2100, even for medium emissions and without Greenland melting. 🌊
More realistic models means stronger weakening - not entirely unexpected.

The High Court’s decision to strike down Victoria’s campaign funding laws is a win for democracy & a reminder that political finance reform must strengthen fairness, transparency & integrity. It also sends a message nationally as federal electoral reform laws are being challenged in the High Court.
🚨NSW anti-protest laws ruled unconstitutional, massive blow for Chris Minns Government and vested interests.
Huge week for democracy, with High Court yesterday unanimously ruling Victorian ALP Govt's rigging of donations laws likewise unconstitutional.

In particular, the Court has said that promoting “social cohesion”, in the sense of avoiding divisive or upsetting discourse, is not a legitimate objective that is compatible with the Australian democratic system. A strong statement.
