The XKCD Dependency meme

The XKCD Dependency meme

Computationally formalising a verbal theory is an eye-opening experience because it forces you to openly state all the assumptions that the theory rest on

@ashleylwatts.bsky.social your rewrite is still one of if not the best edits to a written document of mine I’ve ever seen (of the K I missed the submission deadline for while on postdoc). 2nd place goes to Bunmi Olatunji’s brutal and much needed edits to my personal statement for grad school apps.

How Intensity Profile Drawings Transform ESM / EMA Assessment.

Most #EMA / #ESM studies rely on snapshots 📸

But experience is continuous!

What if real insights live *between* measurements? 📉

Dr. Leonie Cloos used #m-Path’s continuous line item to collect affective intensity profiles in everyday life:

Mental Disorders as Homeostatic Property Clusters This narrative review explores the idea of understanding mental disorders according to homeostatic property clusters rather than through typical classification systems.

Hey friends, my new paper was just published in JAMA Psychiatry. I draw on biological species classification to sketch a new framework for psychiatric nosology.

Brief summary follows below.

Scientists, it's time to pay your taxes. This arrangement—where a small number of dedicated scientist activists fight for the whole of the ecosystem—isn’t sustainable.

Cuts to scientific research will have effects for years to come. @standupforscience.bsky.social has been an important voice connecting scientists & all of us.
@cdelawalla.bsky.social leads that group, & her latest post is a call to action to restore funding

Predictors of response compliance in ESM / EMA research

Why do participants stop responding in #ESM / #EMA studies? 📱🔔

Average compliance is about 7️⃣9️⃣%, but that hides massive variation.

Our new m-Path blog reviews predictors of response compliance: study design, incentives, participant traits, and time effects.

For instance: @claireecusack.bsky.social just submitted a paper today in which we show that discrete emotion states predict discrete avoidance behavior in SAD with *very* high accuracy. We know this, right? But now we can locate the phenomenon in *specific moments of time* à la JITAI concepts.

⚠️ Despite all the hype, chatbots still make terrible doctors. Out today is the largest user study of language models for medical self-diagnosis. We found that chatbots provide inaccurate and inconsistent answers, and that people are better off using online searches or their own judgment.

Seven Symptoms Over Nearly 4,000 Days: Item-Level Variability in the Psychometric Properties of Daily Alcohol Use Disorder Symptoms in Young Adult Drinkers - Kevin M. King, Dahyeon Kang, Megan E. Schu... People experience symptoms of alcohol use disorders (AUD) in their daily lives, including more impairment-based symptoms (e.g., hazardous use, interpersonal pro...

I kept reading EMA studies claiming to test etiological theories of AUD, but I realized they never actually measured how people experience AUD in their daily lives. So we set out to see what we could learn with existing data.

If our theories have to do with people's daily experience then we really need to know how well we're measuring daily experience.

So we need more of what Kevin's team is doing here! Just because your item has the right words in it doesn't mean you know what it measures, or how well.
