What a pleasure to have @juanauz.bsky.social with us at HSU Hamburg to discuss the IACtHR advisory opinion as it connects to the lives, material realities, and fights of social movements in LatAm, especially of indigenous communities. Thank you so much for the brilliant and thought-provoking talk!

Thanks to comrades at @cailesil.bsky.social for inviting us to connect the legal responses to the genocide in Gaza with our own research. It was an important space to identify the possibilities the law might entail for liberation.

The Legal Consequences of Climate Harm

@juanauz.bsky.social explains how the #ICJ and #IACtHR climate opinions forge a blueprint for climate justice together, linking state responsibility, human rights, and reparations, establishing the "groundwork for a new phase of climate litigation.”🌎⚖️

The Legal Consequences of Climate Harm

Is there any complementarity between the ICJ's and the IACtHR's advisory opinions on climate change? I argue there is, specifically on attribution, causation, and remedies, albeit from specific approaches.

Thanks to @voelkerrechtsblog.org for the space and a shoutout to the symposium organizers!

Hi! I highly recommend Matt Huber’s Climate Change as Class War, from which I took that quote. The context is that capitalists' drive for profit is an abstraction, indifferent to the ruinous effects on our planet’s life support systems. It is not a new argument, but it is no less valid.

Yes, the ICJ Advisory Opinion is the hot topic, but don't forget about human rights law!

For insights on the Inter-American Court’s AO on climate emergency, listen to our chat with comrade @ntinatzouvala.bsky.social on #CalledtotheBar.

Thanks to @djag2.bsky.social for this brilliant podcast!

The ICJ just opened the floodgates for international climate litigation.

Now is the time when every single climate-vulnerable state must file a lawsuit against the imperialist fossil fuels axis, namely the US, the UK, OPEC countries, Norway, etc.

A new dawn for climate reparations!

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights issued its Advisory Opinion on Climate Emergency earlier this month. There's a LOT to be said about its content, but for now, I am sharing my first impressions in case you are interested 😎

Cool! Is it open to the public? I'd love to attend in person :)

Folks are excited about the groundbreaking Inter-American Court’s Advisory Opinion.

It declares that the prohibition of significant environmental harm is jus cogens.

However, do you know what other prohibition is also a jus cogens norm and has been for a long time? Genocide!

How is that going?

The Inter-American Court just issued its advisory opinion on the climate emergency, and it is PATHBREAKING!

It recognizes the rights:

- to a safe climate
- of Nature
- And environmental protection as jus cogens!

Europe: No to a right to a healthy environment, and we are complicit in genocide 🫠

“Replacing UN agencies with a private foundation and a private security firm further signals the political reframing of Gaza as a site outside the normal rules of international law.”

Thanks, Julia, for such an eloquent and thorough analysis of Israel’s attempts at outsourcing its obligations!

24/🔥The judges have clearly established that the civil responsibility of fossil fuel majors can be engaged in the context of climate related harms.
🎉Here is the legal precedent that the #ClimateJustice had been awaiting - with significance well beyond Germany!

Precaution as Obligation?

📃 @juanauz.bsky.social analyzes the IACtHR’s landmark ruling holding Ecuador internationally responsible for violations against the Tagaeri & Taromenane. The judgment advances Indigenous rights and frames the precautionary principle as a justiciable obligation.

I’m happy to share my insights on the Tagaeri and Taromenane v. Ecuador case before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

I analyze the Court's application of the precautionary principle and its potential ripple effects.

Thank you @voelkerrechtsblog.org for the space and the editorial support.

Resisting Erasure This essential read provides clarity on the intertwined relationships of global capitalism, energy politics, and racial oppression, and challenges readers to rethink their understanding of Palestine. ...

i just head from a lil birdie (@pashukanist.bsky.social) that a new book (Rob insists on calling it a pamphlet but if it looks like a book and reads like a book) offering a Marxist analysis of the ongoing struggle in Palestine is about to drop

Exactly this!

Climate activists who refuse to integrate anti-genocide and anti-imperialist dimensions in their political discourse and praxis because “it is unrelated” are not safe from fascism.

Saving the planet without liberating Palestine is likening gardening to Ecology.

After repeatedly violating every single commitment under the ceasefire, Israel is now fully resuming the genocide of the already destroyed Gaza concentration camp.

The world is watching.

History will remember who stood on the sidelines of this unspeakable atrocity.

More genocidal statements from Israeli ministers:

Netanyahu Minister: 'Only Solution for Gaza Is to Empty It of Gazans,' God Sent Us Trump to Build Settlements

This statement is quite discomforting. It is concerning that the organizers of the ESIL2025 conference at FU, the university that censored Albanese and Weizman’s talk, suggested that the censored event was “antisemitic.”

The statement is silent on that tactic of silencing. Will FU censor again?
