by the same token, I did play a character who was almost entirely motivated by money, so while no one else cared too much about gaining cash during the campaign my character was all about it (mostly because he would then buy expensive jewels to decorate his hat).
I suppose it depends on how strict your game is about players actually having to buy things. Most campaigns I've been in no one cares about the monetary systems, so unless you need money to buy something really expensive it becomes accounting for accountings sake.
