We have over 3,000 Democratic and Republican parties. We have lots of coalitions and caucuses. We have countless special interests.

But the fact is, it’s not even remotely correct to call it “two political parties.”
We do not in fact have just 2 poltical parties, even if you only count the ones with “Democratic” or “Republican” in their names, we actually have somewhere upward of 6,100 of them.
They’re all different groups! They have their own rules and committees and candidates! Way more than two!
The “two-party system” resulting from so-called “first past the post” election systems, means that such individual election contests *tend* to have two viable candidates, aka “two parties to the election.” Notice the party is a candidate.
This does NOT actually imply only 2 political parties.
Most annoying thing about US politics is the know it all’s who say “it’s a two party system!” but don’t really know what that means.
