At the end of WW2 the rail industry had only had to cope with cars on roads. It was the interstate system that caused railroads to generally abandon passenger service and become bulk freight haulers.
We did similar when C&O abandoned their passenger service.
My dad drove the Vista Cruiser alongside on the interstate as we kids and mom went to grandmas on the train then we all came home in the car.
Electric vehicles were extremely inefficient then. The ic engine for cars was superior then. It took us a century and the ubiquity of affordable Li-ion battery tech to make electric cars a competitive force.
I don’t know that it was so much actively dismantled as passively fell into unprofitability as individuals could own a car.
