While we wait to see whether Orban's autocracy can be overcome in Hungary, @palmapolyak.bsky.social's essential words from a few weeks ago about the radical hope inherent in voting & democracy ring so true. 👇
I normally don’t care too much who other countries elect, since it’s often based on local issues I’m not in a position to fully appreciate. But Orban has had a poisonous effect that goes well beyond Hungary. A lot of people will be better off with him gone.
Not sure why that we’re hearing reports of a close election in Hungary that I think are inaccurate. Initial first projections have Magyar quite close to 2/3. Orban’s representative was ashen on TV. Inaccuracies have more than normal consequences because could fuel an Orban narrative of fraud etc.
I agree. This event has been meteorologically astonishing, and its impacts will be felt long after it ends in terms of record low snowpack, sharply increased wildfire risk, and extreme low watershed runoff/streamflow into summer and beyond.
A bar chart showing a shift since 2005: fewer people live in democracies, while autocracies and autocratising countries now account for a much larger share of the world’s population.
A line chart comparing democratic decline across countries. The US shows a faster early drop in democratic standards than peers, outpacing countries like India and Serbia, though Hungary and Turkey see deeper long-term declines.
Democracy is on the brink of a worldwide depression — with the US leading the decline. Civil rights and equality in the land of the free have fallen to the levels of the mid-1960s and freedom of expression is at its lowest since the 1950s.

FWIW absolutely no one I know who has expertise in spaceflight or planetary exploration thinks this is either remotely plausible or a good idea to attempt on such a timeline. The dominant reaction is somewhere on the spectrum between mockery and dismay. Real, important science was cancelled for this

Global sea surface temperatures continue breaking daily records, with Mar. 23 having a preliminary SST of 21.141°C, ahead of the previous daily record of 21.118°C set in 2024.
This graph shows how fast SSTs are rising compared to pre-2023 temperatures.

Brits - your cut out and keep guide to when to expect Reform Rage.
Seven out of ten Reform-controlled councils have scrapped climate targets, in Kent, Durham, Lancashire, Staffordshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and West Nottinghamshire (analysis by Grantham Institute at LSE).
It's campaigning on this for Holyrood too. It's funded by fossil fuel interests. 🤦🏼♀️
Map of U.S., from coolwx.com, showing locations currently experiencing record-breaking temperatures. There are countless such locations in the Western U.S., with hundreds of red dots (locations breaking daily record highs) and countless pink dots (locations breaking March monthly record highs). The region of record heat extends from the Pacific Coast to east the Mississippi River, and from Canada to Mexico. The region of red and pink dots is vastly larger even than yesterday's (or the day before, or the day before, or the day before, same as it ever was, same...as it ever was...).
Incredibly, even *more* locations across U.S. are today experiencing their warmest March temperatures on record--many by a wide margin, with some even breaking April records. This includes most or all of: AZ, UT, CO, NM, WY, NE, KS, MO, IA, plus portions of many other states. 🫠
Line graph time series of 2026's daily Arctic sea ice extent compared to decadal averages from the 1980s to the 2010s. The decadal averages are shown with different colored lines with purple for the 1980s, blue for the 1990s, green for the 2000s, and white for the 2010s. Thin white lines are also shown for each year from 2000 to 2025. 2026 is shown with a thick gold line. There is a long-term decreasing trend in ice extent for every day of the year shown on this graph between February and April by looking at the decadal average line positions.
🚨 Ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the *lowest* on record (JAXA data)...
• about 640,000 km² below the 2010s mean
• about 1,050,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 1,460,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 1,950,000 km² below the 1980s mean

For every pound spent on net zero, the benefits would outweigh the cost by between 2.2 and 4.1 times says @thecccuk.bsky.social

FACTS:
Net Zero barely nudges your bill.
Fossil‑fuel wars send it through the roof.
So when Farage and his ilk slags off renewables while fanning conflict, remember who actually hikes your costs.
I'm so sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences.
From my POV this week Starmer has a strong evidence point that it's a damned good thing he's the PM and not either of the two leading opposition candidates hoping to replace him.
A day of bounty! Monthly Arctic sea-ice data was just posted by PIOMAS.
Here is average Arctic ice thickness, through Feb. 28. Thickness is currently second lowest for the date, with only 2017 seeing lower average thickness than 2026.

NEW ANALYSIS: UK emissions fell 2.4% in 2025 as coal fell to a 400-year low. Incredibly, we used less coal last year than than in 1600, when Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne and Shakespeare was writing Hamlet.

Average Arctic sea-ice thickness is at a *record low* for the date, if we are looking at either the 1-year or 3-year running average.
I'll post the volume graphics tomorrow, which are *not* at record lows.

Fossil fuel giant wins $370 million tax break for burning gas as an ‘alternative fuel’ The IRS ruling appears to allow one of the world’s largest exporters of natural gas to claim its heavily polluting tankers are low-emissions “motorboats.”
I cannot ever stop tearing my hair out about climate activists being labelled 'unrealistic' when the fossil fuel business bros persistently do shit like this

The rate of change of renewables in China is accelerating. Solar has passed wind in generation. Fossil fuel generation is decreasing. Renewables will pass fossil fuels by the early 2030's or sooner. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨💧🔋
