“It’s not that I was embarrassed by Hugh or that I thought someone better might come along,” David Sedaris writes, in a new Personal History. “I just shudder when I hear a man say the words ‘my husband.’ ” www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
If this is where the US ends up, the Trump administration is waving the white flag. Nothing about Iranian nukes, nothing about keeping the Strait open and free, nothing about regime change. A strategic waste and failure of historic proportions.
So let me get this straight: the goal of Trump’s war with Iran is to end up back in the Obama nuclear deal he pulled out of, and to “reopen” the Strait of Hormuz, which was open before the conflict began. That’s the strategy?
I'm updating the famous Chinese curse "May you live in interesting times" to "May you live in incompetent times" to be more relevant to those of us living in the United States right now.

housing is more expensive now, but also a lot safer. this kind of home was considered cream of the crop in the 1980s
It’s possible that this Administration’s security is such a clown show that that insider stock bet was by Russia or Iran.
I'm sure we have all learned our lesson and this will never happen again.
BREAKING: Just five minutes before Trump's announcement to halt the attacks on Iran, massive trades hit the market.
$1.5 billion in S&P 500 (ES) futures was bought while $192 million in oil (CL) futures was sold.
These orders were 4–6x larger than anything else.
They made huge gains.
Unusual.
It’s a WHICH hunt. :/
"What follows is not satire. Satire requires exaggeration, and you cannot exaggerate something that is already operating at maximum absurdity. This is simply the news, and nothing but the news. Told straight, in a universe that has clearly stopped taking its medication."
Despite the anti-renewables narrative, solar + wind hit a record 17% of U.S. electricity in 2025
Add rooftop solar? ~19%. No slogans. No spin. Just growth.
Cost curves don’t argue. They win. This isn’t a debate anymore — it’s a takeover. #Bettrification
Not once does this story mention that offering a federal job in exchange for a political favor is a crime
Remember when DOGE was destroying foreign aid because it was supposedly too expensive? The entire US foreign aid budget in 2024 was $62 billion.

IT can’t happen soon enough.

Care to watch the White House correspondent for PBS News Hour as she challenges the president on voter fraud and a "rigged" election?
When we use the term "fact-based," this is what we mean.
A DOGE staffer assigned to the National Endowment for the Humanities to flag grants for "DEI" tries to explain what "DEI" is. This deposition is part of a lawsuit by the @acls1919.bsky.social, @historians.org and @modernlanguage.bsky.social.
Scientific Shot of a Peacock mantis shrimp eyes which are the most advanced in the animal world. Photo by Daniel Sasse.
the mantis shrimp has 16 types of color receptors.
humans have 3.
we see roughly 10 million colors and think that's impressive.
the mantis shrimp is sitting there processing a visual reality so hyperchromatic that scientists genuinely aren't sure what it's like to be one.

What's Trump up to in Iran? Timothy Snyder in his column today and Sid Blumenthal earlier in the week are thinking the same thing: the 2026 elections are uppermost in his mind.
Worth watching the whole clip, but purely in propaganda terms it seems to me, admittedly just an amateur observer when it comes to war fighting, that it may be useful to send the message to the 91+ million Iranian civilians that we are not trying to kill them.
