Especially when you are pushing the medium to new and interesting directions, it's often tough, and progress is slow.

But good things will come - if I were nearby, I'd love to try this!
There is a beautiful crafty and scrappy quality to it ❤️

The game is carefully written, lovely developed, and thoroughly playtested.

It pays attention to everybody involved, with beautiful Appendices at the end with recommended names, deities and cities, a glossary and an index, a recipe for Sumerian Supper (!!)...

I remember playing a Revenant, a creature returned from the Underworld whose gender was “empty tomb”, whose body was “locked room”, and whose mood was “trying on emotions” - superb character creation options.

I tried "Defy the Gods" at Metatopia in 2023: what I remember is a fierce PBTA game of pushing every limit and working with powerful characters, weaving stories of adventure, romance, and power.

“Defy the Gods” by @hecticelectron.bsky.social, distributed by @plusoneexp.bsky.social, just arrived in the mail.

It is a beautiful hardcover edition, filled with gorgeous illustrations by various artists, intriguing playbooks, and a detailed setting for a fantasy ancient Mesopotamian world.

I just finished a round of judging for the Games for Change Student Challenge. I worked on tabletop games: all board/card games, zero RPGs.
The amount of roll-and-move with low to no agency or space for meaningful choices I had to go through made me want to scream. But there were some gems!

This is still, of course, within an academic setting. But it's a good step for our institution to see the potential for different fields and contexts.

... its educational potential, and some who are preparing for an interactive show in the fall.
The medium is shared between two courses and for different goals, and I am hoping it leads to more collaborations with Theater!

Well we just invited Jason Morningstar to campus in the fall as a joint venture between the Theater Department and the College of Design and Engineering Studies, and we will play some of his larps with two groups of students: some who study tabletop game design and think about ...

Well, you could make a game about it afterwards, so you can use the knowledge in an interesting way...

Yeah, that sucks. If you have ideas on how to make it better, send them to the teacher! And send them to me, I AM INTERESTED!

Next class should start with this post as a question posed to the class, and let pointed debates start, with examples from slides and buildings studied. It would be great!

Agreed, and on the other side, it's mostly a way to check attendance. It's not a good way, though.
I ask students on our Discord server to take turns creating summaries of what they played in class, so we have a class record. I also ask them to use the chat to introduce themselves to form groups.

Go through my to-be-read list (both fiction and non-fiction), go through my to-be-played game list, go through my to-be-watched list, travel and walk in many new places, try new food and drinks, and throughout all that journal and keep a diary of ideas and inspirations from all experiences.

The War by Nguyen Conditions A bundle by Nguyen Conditions, $21.00 for They Took Our War, Before the Boats

And here are the games we discussed the most: "They Took Our War", a descended-from-the-queen game for 3-6 people, and "Before the Boats", a wretched-and-alone-style solo game.

Both incredibly powerful, both incredibly important.
Go get them as a bundle.

@senfoonglim.bsky.social and I interviewed @knitnack.bsky.social today for RPG Roots. We talked about the Vietnamese diaspora, RPGs as legacy and memory, and respecting our games and our stories.

It was a fantastic chat, and I want to highlight Kevin's work.

Here's the main Itch page:
