Another sketchbook drawing from 6 years ago. Gosh, why do these all feel relevant again?
I barely knew Melissa but could tell she was a real one. Thank you for all you did for our community.
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”
That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.
Two boxy horizontal panels on white show weather of a certain emotional landscape: on top: a purple thunderstorm rolls into the mountains in evening, clouds rumbling and pushing fog down into the darkening valley. The sun is a small and dying distant yellow scribble. On the bottom: close up green-gray churning river water, peaked by foam that is just a hint yellow, a little dirtier of a river perhaps than one might like. Though the image may stand alone, the origin of the piece is actually the brooding personality of teen delinquent Onion Pendergrass. He is the main protagonist of the graphic novel, Blue Hollow, and if these drawings suggest any deeper meaning, it is only that he has a melancholy disposition at the beginning of the story.
