Bookshops in the west sell a simplistic, cozy ideal of Japan, full of cherry blossoms, cats, temples and moody, atmospheric scenes. The reality is obviously that Japan is a complicated culture with a lot more nuance than these tropes.

AI tech people struggle to understand what "governance mechanisms can be used to control companies"... and write really long essays about it. The essays never discuss laws and regulations.
The answer is law.
The law is the mechanism.

Even Sam Altman is finding automation sad.
IBM lists "taking more time to think" as a "technique" for humans to avoid being reliant on AI decisions.
It's amazing that "thinking" is now a "technique," in a world where people are using AI for everything.
Correlation is not always causation but in this case I think the two are linked. When we read, we open ourselves up to the lives of other people. We learn to step outside ourselves. We confront the great ideas of history, good and evil, where we fit into the big scheme of the universe.
The end of reading has correlated with a decline of empathy, an inability to communicate across political lines and a collapse of a feeling of community in the west.

Isn't reviewing a paper with an LLM rather than your brain also ethically wrong? It's interesting how the ethics of this are always only on the side of the worker, not the reviewer / boss / HR.

Is "cozy" the subculture of the 2020s?
Agree with this.
AI safety is going to be a competitive advantage for tech firms in the next 5 years as more errors, rogue systems and human rights breaches occur. The firms that can prove their products are safer will get more customers.

5. A national AI Safety Institute would be a game changer, giving attention to concerns in the Asia Pacific. Issues of bias, mistreated mechanical Turk workers, protection of indigenous culture - would have a spotlight. #AIregulation #AIGovernance #AISafetyInstitute #AsiaPacific #privacy #auspol
4. Why?
- One of the only western nations without a national bill of rights.
- Very weak privacy laws.
- Very weak data protection laws.
- A national (and academic) conversation too focused on the government's use of tech, rather than private companies.
3. With the world racing towards AGI, Australia remains a place ripe for the interference of big tech companies.
2. An agreement with Singapore was its first modest gesture and the government has yet to draft comprehensive laws.
1. Australia has largely sat out on the conversation surrounding AI Safety happening globally, missing out on numerous safety summits and conferences.
Should Australia have its own AI Safety Institute? 🧵A thread.

It's worth remembering that one of the main distinctions of humans from most animals is our opposable thumbs - allowing us to build, make tools and create. Same with our capacity for high reason and imagination.
Giving up our unique capabilities to machines is an anti-humanist view of the future.
Presumably they're aiming for a negative reaction for this. But nevertheless, it speaks to the pace of technological change we're witnessing and how much we are willing to sacrifice in terms of creativity and emotional expression.
@kukmichal.bsky.social how do you describe legal design or legal engineering?
