Grades are in.
Yohei Takaoka and Edier Ocampo starred early, Tate Johnson impressed at fullback, and Sebastian Berhalter sealed the dramatic 3-2 comeback with a stoppage-time strike.
We break it down in the latest Report Card.

Vancouver were the better side against Portland, even if it took a Sebastian Berhalter stoppage-time winner to settle it.
Our take on a weird, wild, and ultimately deserved 3-2 win for the Whitecaps over the Timbers.

Had this match not turned around the way it did, I was going to be the xG nerd in the corner talking about the fact the Whitecaps were still dominant in a 2-1 loss.
Glad I don't have to do that now.

FT Thoughts:
-An instant classic comeback win!
-Not perfect for Vancouver, but still dominant outside a small phase at the end of the first half.
-Cubas was missed for sure, Laborda clearly better out wide.
-Caicedo great off the bench, Seba with the moment at the end.

That match was a frustrating watch for long stretches here at BC Place, but it paid off in the end.
Cascadia heritage right there, ending things with a bang!

Berrrrrrrrrrhalter!!!!!
3-2!
#VWFC
A tough break for the visitors, but no less than the Whitecaps deserve.
A clear handball and Müller levels the match from the spot.
2-2.

Bruno off to a good start!

Bruno Caicedo making his Whitecaps debut!
Sabaly exits.

Sabbi all alone!
But can't make contact.

That ball from Jeevan!
Great chance for Vancouver, but the 'Caps still looking for an answer.
#VWFC
Not a lot in that, but there was a push.
#VWFC
A swap as Sabbi comes on for AZ to start the second half. Sabaly now on the left, Sabbi on the right.
#VWFC
I think the free role just suits him better at this stage.
HT Thoughts:
-Timbers came on at the end of the half, but more VWFC blunders and a great volley than consistent play. (1.24-0.42 xG)
-'Caps lacking the killer edge in the final third again.
-Sabaly has been ok, maybe time to switch things at the half, Badwal on the wing?
#VWFC
Oof, Laborda not covering himself in glory there.
Brutal goal to concede right before the half.
2-1.
#VWFC
Vancouver can't clear their lines after a corner, and it's a tremendous volley from the Timbers' Juan Mosquera at the edge of the box.
1-1!

Not a Portland Timbers commentator, but every time I’ve watched them over the last couple of years, I end up asking myself the same question:
How exactly does this team want to play?
I still don’t have a clear answer. Most of the time, it feels like 1v1s and vibes.
#VWFC
Vancouver with a dangerous free kick, almost had a second there.
#VWFC
Trading saves now, Takaoka comes out confidently at the other end.
#VWFC
Better goalkeeping from Pantemis there, as Sabaly is denied at the doorstep.
#VWFC
Fun Fact: Third assist for Takaoka as a member of the 'Caps. One last year, and one back in 2023 as well.
The Whitecaps had been controlling proceedings to start the match, but that's a tough blow for the Timbers to give away a cheap one.
#VWFC
A great ball from Yohei finds the foot of Ocampo, and Pantemis misreads things to leave the net wide open!
1-0 Vancouver.

Here we go, back at BC Place!
#VWFC
Badwal in the double pivot, Sabaly gets another start.
Laborda central, Tate at left back.
Thoughts?
