Old school public telephone
I’m a fan of the neighborhood FU TEL public telephones around town futel.net/about/
What is most striking to me, and most discouraging, is that [the students] are so apathetic while being neither blind nor unconscious. They know and deplore the oppression of thirteen million blacks, the terrible poverty of the South, the almost equally desperate poverty that pollutes the big cities. They witness the rise, more ominous every day, of racism and reactionary attitudes—the birth of a kind of fascism. They know that their country is responsible for the world’s future. But they themselves don’t feel responsible for anything, because they don’t think they can do anything in this world. At the age of twenty, they are convinced that their thought is futile, their good intentions ineffective: “America is too vast and heavy a body for one individual to move it.” And this evening I formulate what I’ve been thinking for days. In America, the individual is nothing. He is made into an abstract object of worship; by persuading him of his individual value, one stifles the awakening of a collective spirit in him. But reduced to himself in this way, he is robbed of any concrete power. Without collective hope or personal audacity, what can the individual do? Submit or, if by some rare chance this submission is too odious, leave the country. Simone de Beauvoir, in America Day by Day

every time I read de Beauvoir, even the little things, I feel like I should read more de Beauvoir…
In all honesty, I feel confident she'd do a better job than Vance...
Jared Golden (Maine) proving my point that 97.5% of Jareds are terrible people.
I was able to claude-block and add my own big words, once I understood the actual concern (apparently, it's easier to spend $$$ on things that people don't understand and therefore believe they can't do themselves... even with Claude).
I work hard to remove jargon and make my work as accessible and approachable as possible. Today I had a client tell me they wanted to run my proposal through Claude to add a few big words before sending it to their boss. I don't love this world.
Thanks, this definitely looks promising
atproto pals, who is making interesting things related to music? less interested in music making, more interested in everything else. thanks.

It was great to connect. Maybe next time we’ll get @ronbronson.com to join us…
last week I saw a sticker with Leon Czolgosz’s last words (credited to Fred C. Nieman) and now I can’t stop wondering if the sticker vandal made a mistake or a deliberate choice…
“A democracy is more than a form of government; it is primarily a mode of associated living.” This line got me hooked on Dewey as a young designer (nearly 30 years ago). It now feels obvious, but it turned on so many lights: design as a democratic process / democracy as an outcome of design
I'm listening to the Pomegranates comp this morning...

an elder couple on a roof in Tunisa, watching the sunset, and drinking terrible beer.
Today, marks 27 years. Despite so many things being terrible in the world, I am always grateful that our little corner is doing so well. Looking forward to more adventures and rooftop beers!
