Birkbeck academic awarded 2025 British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship Dr Daniel Yon, Reader in Cognitive Neuroscience at Birkbeck, has been announced as a recipient of a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship.

Really delighted to have been awarded a Mid-Career Fellowship by the @britishacademy.bsky.social , which I’ll be using to work on a new book about the human imagination 🧠

My institution is offering training to students on "building your personal brand." This feels yuck to me... Am I being naive/idealistic? What happened to the highest ideals of the academy, the impersonal quest for truth, and all that?

Neural mechanisms of predictive processing: a collaborative community experiment through the OpenScope program This review synthesizes advances in predictive processing within the sensory cortex. Predictive processing theorizes that the brain continuously predicts sensory inputs, refining neuronal responses by...

Exactly one year after sharing this gigantic review arxiv.org/abs/2504.09614, we just shared 56TB of data with the world: Entirely new experiments described in the review. And more is coming...

Neural circuits encode prior knowledge of temporal statistics - Nature Neuroscience This study shows that cerebellar circuits learn and encode prior probabilities of event timing. Cell-type-specific neural activity reflects environmental statistics and guides predictive motor behavio...

Our work on how neural circuits in the cerebellum encode prior probabilities led by Julius Koppen is out now in Nature Neuroscience www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Big thanks to Julius Koppen & the whole team! And dedicated to all of us who found inspiration in Bayesian theories of the brain!

Very interesting sounding paper on the role of the default mode network in visual perception by Ujhelyi, Korda & Zaretskaya. The authors propose that the DMN provides top-down information from memory and semantic knowledge to guide perception. #neuroskyence

Super excited to share this preprint! How do we disentangle underlying structure from the particular features of a learning episode to benefit future learning? We find that memory reactivation during sleep promotes this structure abstraction process.

We’ve got an exciting new thing to share! We have causal evidence (using TMR) that memory reactivation during sleep promotes abstract understanding of underlying structure, allowing transfer learning in a new domain with zero superficial feature overlap with the learned one.

This tenure denial is absurd! Larisa is extremely productive, has an NSF CAREER, and won multiple early career awards, among other accolades.

It pains me to think about what she’s going through, having gone through a similar experience at that department (Columbia Psychology) 3 years ago.

The dominance of large-scale phase dynamics in human cortex, from delta to gamma The phase of cortical activity, measured in the gray matter, is organized at multiple spatial scales, with the largest scales explaining most variance in phase at a given temporal frequency.

Cortex is rhythmic: Brain rhythms coordinate over large distances. The strongest phase organization spans up to 8–16 cm of cortex.
