Scour all surfaces. Render the whole world smooth and featureless. Purge all roughness and texture. One flawless sphere in the dark void of space. P e r f e c t i o n

Why do the Japanese like their buns askew (2026)

It's hard to tell where to draw the line because even a really good placeholder can inspire you to write better. If you can see how it all comes together, that goes a long way. But you could get cornered in a cool design that doesn't work narratively, trying to force it. As happened recently to me.

Tomorrow I'm gonna take a crack at writing this game without any UI elements, without any interactivity, not even temporary assets. Just text and choices. Make sure that it's fun and interesting and the characters are working. I don't wanna get stuck again no matter how much I like doing all that.

Being able to scale from four lanes to five to full plastic instrument is kinda god tier for this disabled gamer; I can pick whatever works best for me. I was belting out Linkin Park in minutes on expert full combo.

Music selections are... dodgy, a LOT of modern pop, but there's still a solid core.

As much as it ruins my indie cred, Fortnite adding proper vocals and drum support to Festival finally brings it up to speed with Rock Band -- and surpasses, since we still get easy keyboard tapping style too with those as options. I LOVED Rock Band dearly and this scratches the itch.

I figure at worst this is just going to be another indulgent piece of retro nonsense. I mean, shadow over cyberspace definitely pales compared to laugh track, and this one's very much in cyberspace's wheelhouse. But I'm never a particularly good judge of my own work.

It feels good to be working on a game project again. To be fired up with new ideas, figuring things out on the fly, cobbling together a plan out of wildly different parts. I have no clue if this is actually going to work, it's very weird and yet very familiar in style, but we'll see.

I'm VERY far from being able to render that -- I used to be at that level, but nope. Mostly I wanna get some very basic logo work done, and a premade character character model rendered.

Bryce is absolutely period authentic; i did a LITTLE in it, back in the day. But I think learning two systems is probably one too many.

This is just for, like, a logo and one low-poly character i bought a model for $2.

I wanna do crappy 90s 3-D CG for this game project. Time to learn Blender, I guess. Back when I was a teenager I was a whiz with Autodesk 3-D Studio for MS-DOS so it's more about learning the interface. ...hopefully. "Go learn Blender" is probably overkill for this, but I want authenticity.

The worst variant is when you get an idea just as you're trying to fall asleep. Like now. This sucks.

The start of a project is always so weird. You're making dinner or hitting the bathroom, while you're cooking away in the back of your mind trying to come up with plot structure and game designs. You solve it without even thinking about it. Then you have to go write it down. Again and again.

Born to play Lucasarts Games
Cursed to play Sierra On-Line Games

(nah I love both just I really preferred how Lucasarts didn't arbitrarily kick your ass if you fail a bit of timing or moon logic)

It really hasn't been beaten yet in terms of developing your own unique character. I wish more games would divorce the concept of your appearance from your gear. Looking cool from day one really helps.

I did the thing. I'm guessing half of these will be headscratchers, though. I am beyond OG and into the paleolithic.

An incredibly miniature version of world one – two from super Mario Brothers. It's tucked away inside the shell of the game console.

The completed Lego Nintendo entertainment system unit, with a super Mario Brothers cartridge on top. Looks pretty much like the real thing.

For a boring gray box, the Lego NES sure is incredibly complicated to put together. The Easter egg of a hidden world 1–2 diorama is delightful but kind of a pain to put together! Still, worth it in the end.

I really do appreciate that. I haven't had much response to the release, so knowing that it's really making a difference for someone is actually very nice. Enjoy!

I'm at that particular level of exhausted where I can't do anything creative, I can't watch anything new, and I have no idea what to do. Brain does not accepting inputs. But I'm also two hours away from bedtime so kind of leaves me up a creek.

Started doing UI mockups for the new game project. It's retreading some ground with shadow over cyberspace, but I feel like this has its own unique spin despite being a twisted memory of PC games past.

And yes, absolutely no AI in preproduction. Not even using the version of my engine which has it.

The game itself is from 2018 so it predates the stuff, but they announced a sequel & I expect it to be full of AI-gen slop

So my current thinking is to take the assets I've already paid for and roll them into the game that will come after this, and do something else for now. I have an idea cooking in my head, a combination of previous ideas and some new inspirations. Once I have something solid, I'll let you know.

Had to make some hard decisions about my current game project today. I've tried tweaking it, I've tried rewriting, I've tried everything and it's just not working. That on top of disability stress and other problems, it's a bad formula. And forcing it isn't going to make it suddenly start to click.

All kidding aside, I do love building city sets. When I was a kid I loved modern buildings and facilities, which has carried through to my love of cities today. They're simple and elegant sets without a whole lot of backbreaking effort to put together.

Working on a Lego airport, complete with privacy invasive Lego homeland security checkpoint! Decided to shift things up a bit, stuff the guard into his own body scanner while what I pretend to be an international human rights inspector walks straight on through. Imagination is beautiful~
