Yellowface is SO good and so insidious and somehow inspiring? In the way that I need to write more, not in the way that I need to steal another author's work and take credit for it.

If he's going to get a national profile on the strength of a younger woman's campaign, I'm going to come out and say it: during his short-lived tenure as a math professor, Biss had an inappropriate romantic relationship with one of his undergraduate students. I was that student.

A drawing of some things you might find in a kitchen: a tea towel, a bundle of herbs (parsley, thyme, sage, bay), two wooden spoons, some butcher's twine, a cutting board, a big knife, a candle stub on a little plate, a ceramic jar, some cardamom pods, a garlic bulb (bisected).

An intricate comic-style poster drawn digitally, depicting a group of figures in a dark, gloomy fantasy setting, surrounded by gothic arches.. The colours are contrasting shades of muted reds and pale green on black and grey background. There is a bright red-pink moon on the top edge of the illustration, lighting the figures below.
The center has 6 adventurers huddled together back to back, all in pensive and solemn state. There are roots winding their way up the group and up the stone arches on the borders. Above the group of characters, there is a large portrait of a dark haired vampire woman and 5 more smaller vampire figures to her side arranged in a crescent. There is a castle and a bare-branched tree in the background as well.
The plaque at the bottom edge says “Curse of Strahd”
Characters:
Top left - Orren ( @aghdom.eu ), top right - Bo’rah ( tumblr.com/betaadmin ), center - Petrichor ( @eyeofthenewt.bsky.social ), bottom left - NPC Ezra (genderbent Esmeralda) (GM - Paulina) bottom centre - Victoro ( @coupleofkooks.bsky.social ), bottom right - Ireena
Centre page - Countess Strahd, left of her bottom up - Kasym (genderbent Ludmilla), Escher, Anastrasya, Volenta, Rahadin.

This Hit Series Wasn’t Created for Black Fans. We Made It Our Own Anyway. Our long and complicated relationship with the late Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball.

Akira Toriyama died two years ago today. When he passed, I explained how Black American fans of Dragon Ball reinterpreted the series into a contemporary pillar of our culture.

I loved writing this essay, and I hope you enjoy it, too. Piccolo is wearing a wave cap.

too many people are being waaaayyyy too consent manufacturing shaped right now dawg. they fucking blew up kids. if your gut reaction to what's going on right now is anything less than "holy hell this should never have happened and it needs to stop immediately" you need to do a lot of self reflection

You probably can’t personally stop the war in Iran today. Is there something you can do for your neighbors hiding from ice? For a trans person in Kansas? Any local aid orgs or rapid response networks? Phone banks? Anyone already doing good shit that just needs a hand?

A special thanks to every translator carrying ideas and stories across languages to bring us each thrilling new book!" —Maaza Mengiste, author of The Shadow King

I spent a year putting together this bundle of e-books that supports global writers and translators and also supports independent journalism at Global Voices. It only goes a few more days and it's stalled out. I'd love to do better for people, but it would need eyes.

~45 minutes outside Minneapolis this afternoon, a small but spirited crowd is gathered to protest outside the gates of Sherburne County Jail.

According to organizers: the jail has held an average of 131 ICE detainees daily for nearly 20 years. As of 2023, the jail makes $110 per detainee per day.

The way far too many left of center (and plenty even on the left itself) have internalized reactionary propaganda around "cancel culture" has led to a place where any real consequences on those in power are considered "too far."

So even incredibly basic movement tactics end up off the table.

Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads:

The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same...

- Marjane Satrapi, Iranian-French graphic novelist
