This is a fantastic writeup about the heat pump landscape.
Joseph doesn’t have a formal HVAC background. He learned by asking lots of questions to the smartest people solving these problems.

The most important decision you’ll make when getting a new heat pump installed is which contractor to work with.
The brand matters much less, and in many cases you’ll find the exact same equipment with a different sticker on it.
Really great video from Miss Mini Split.

I've only listened to the intro episode so far but what an amazing quote - "Heat pumps can work in every home, it's not a technical problem but a human problem." I'm definitely going to use that in future visit-a-heat-pump events.

I chatted with Brendan Ballou, an expert in private equity and former federal prosecutor, on the latest episode of the Heat Pumped podcast.
His book, Plunder, explores this topic in many industries, and we talk about what it means for HVAC. (2/2)

Is the largest force in HVAC invisible?
Private equity is transforming the industry.
These firms are gobbling up contractors, distributors, software providers, and even equipment manufacturers.
What do these dynamics mean for homeowners trying to install a heat pump? (1/2)

"Private equity is rolling up small HVAC companies under big umbrella organizations. From the outside, it still looks like you're getting [heat pump' quotes from three different companies — but they might all be owned by the same firm."

"Heat pumps don't work in the cold"
I hear variations of this argument all the time. And it drives me crazy!
So I wanted to share a sneak peek into the heat pump design process we use at @vayu.pro. (1/X) 🔌💡🧪
Viessmann Climate Solutions US, the German manufacturer Carrier acquired in 2023 for over $13 billion, on Tuesday launched two new heat pump systems in the U.S. “These new products reflect our commitment to providing advanced, reliable, and energy-efficient solutions for contractors and homeowners,” said a company spokesperson. Here's your regular reminder that brand doesn't matter when it comes to most HVAC equipment.
From what I can tell, this is the same heat pump equipment that has been sold under the Carrier, Bryant, Midea, Day & Night, Weathermaker, Payne and other brands.

Smart and illuminating article from @shreyassudhakar.com, pointing to the tension between treating heat pumps as commodities (lower cost, easier installs) and sophisticated but proprietary controls that allow for higher efficiency.
Li-ion batteries are a commodity. Costs rapidly fell, enabling ubiquitous EVs.
At the same time, HVAC equipment costs sharply rose. Prices doubled in 4 years between 2020 and 2024.
For heat pumps to become ubiquitous, do they need to be a commodity?

This is an important article for anybody interested in how industry can make it easier to replace gas furnaces with heat pumps.
In the article, @shreyassudhakar.com talks about obstacles to commoditization and what needs to change.

Heat pumps are more comfortable because of ~how~ they deliver heating and cooling in your home.
Would you rather take a long shower, or dump a bucket of hot water on your head?
