OH ONE LAST THING: while I didn’t care for the story or world too much, I genuinely loved the segment where you go to the temple with the centipede priests. There was some really cool lore, freaky atmosphere, and a sense of mystery that I thought was great.

Anyways, thanks for reading my stupid bitter rant. I’m sorry I kinda snapped on this game and someday I plan on revisiting it and giving it another chance.

As developers making Armored Core games, which prioritize customization and player freedom, letting you attack a problem from any direction. But Sekiro really throws all that away in favor of having “tight” combat and loses a lot of what makes fromsoft games so good.

But it’s so boiled down that there is only one solution to every problem and I HATE that. Fromsoft’s previous games allow you to explore the world and find items and techniques and souls to change your play style and get stronger to better approach new challenges. Hell, they spent most of their time

And that gets into the reason why I really don’t like this game: there’s no variety. Sure, at a surface level it seems like the purest essence of a soulslike: the player has a few simple options to counter and punish the complex moveset of a variety of complex and intricate bosses.

All of the upgrades. There’s a similar issue with the skill tree, where I don’t feel like more than two of the upgrades actually made any combat smoother. Every fight is the same dance of “tap L1 as you’re getting hit!” And occasionally jump or press two buttons at once.

I’ve heard it described as a “lock and key” system, but honestly I never felt like the game properly nudged me towards what key I should use on what lock (it’s very unintuitive) but also Theres no reward for finding the right lock in the first place! Not to mention the cost you’ve sunk on

You get 2-4 free hits. Thats it! Maybe some extra posture damage. It is, in no way, a substantial reward for exploiting this weakness. But it highlights how you can get so many kinds of sub-weapons, all of which have an arbitrary consumable cost, and none of them really help with any fights.

Now back to guardian ape, it brings up an issue with the game’s player options that I HATE: the prosthetic system. The ape has a weak point in its 2nd phase after you cut its head off, where you Jan a spear into its neck-stump to pull out a centipede. Yuck! But what does this do mechanically?

I promise we’ll get back to guardian ape later, but…

Illusory corrupted monk is a miserable sponge of a boss, the headless swordsman guys are miserable and almost require an arbitrary upgrade for an otherwise useless ability, mist noble is in the game, I could go on.

God I hope this stays buried in the replies.

Ok first off, there are a lot of crap filler bosses. DS2 and BB get a lot of flak for having too many lame bosses, but allow me to introduce you to: two guardian apes.

Just, two versions of a mid-game boss that already demands so much of you.

Last thing I want to clear up, I’ve seen people claim that V1 is actually the antagonist, or that it’s Gabriel, idrk either one is the best, I love those little freaks both in a “silly blorbo” way and a poetic way

Dark souls 2 isn’t actually a game I think *everyone* should play, but I don’t think there’s a game out there that I would force everyone into playing start to finish. I just picked it because people are always knocking it but never gave it a chance.

Biggest personal impact was almost Link: the Faces of Evil because it defined my sense of humor but it wasn’t on there so I just did something earnest (see the post above lmao)

Undertale is on here because it’s part of the reason I realized I could be earnest instead of coating everything in like 10 layers of irony. I mean, I still do that, but it’s as a bit instead of a defense mechanism.
