I like the Slavic for Dimitri but specifically the Greek influenced names hit the vibe I like. Pretty referential and a little cheesy, but I think it would be funny to call him Rodion. Also I think Adrian has a good sound for him.

Anyways I feel like Felix needs those Roman vibes in his name very badly and Dimitri needs multiple syllables, ideally 3 (but alexander is too on the nose and too normie)

There are many hilarious examples of authors who stayed too close to their source material (“Adam” instead of fucking Kylo Ren always cracks me up) but also some go too different and it’s an off vibe (“Nicholas” instead of “Castiel,” which is, to be fair, a particular tough name to handle haha)

One of the mental games I sometimes play with myself is if I was converting all my fics into dubiously original self-published novels, what would I change the names to in order to maintain the same general vibe but de-fandom them?

Felix used to consider irony a mark of idleness: no one who had anything better to do would sit around constructing a story about themself, retelling it for no audience. Now there isn't enough work in the day for him to steer clear of dramatization. The hill that Fhirdiad castle sits upon was shorn in half by an earthquake nearly half a century ago and took most of the castle down with it. Claude's rule was new then, and resources were too scarce to bother saving a palace that would never again house a living king. Felix arrived shortly thereafter, pushing against the exodus of the surviving residents of the castle town. His first weeks in the remains of Castle Fhirdiad were spent digging out the royal crypt. No way to tell what was left intact. The memory of it is sharp still. The work tore all the fingernails from both his hands. He slept with dust in his mouth and beneath his eyelids for the better part of a moon. When at last he uncovered the engraved marble slab marking Dimitri's grave, he lost all feeling in his legs for a time. When he could stand again his torch had gone out. He'd have been lost, in the Fhirdiad of his childhood; as it was, he made it back out into the waning sunlight only because the path he'd dug was too narrow to stray.

In one unwritten volume is everything he's forgotten ever saying to Dimitri, but knows he must have said—the babble and arguments of children, of mindless hours spent alongside one another—and the second, slimmer volume, worn with recitation, is what he recalls of their time together. Become a gravekeeper, he'd told Dimitri once. He laughs, touching his hand to the memory like a stone in his pocket, and the walls of the crypt hand his voice back to him doubled: the way he felt he was once, back when his heart walked around outside him, and to serve him was to serve them both—to fail them, he has since found, is the same.
