DEFINITION OF THE DAY
Australopithecus, n. A concise swear from down under.
I think it seven worse than that.
Mementobermori.
I'm happy with that because a punctuation mark is a distinct thing from (and carries meaning distinct from) any word it may be attached to.
My gripe with the first is that as presented it doesn't say what it means (breaking Afrit's injunction). I feel that the need for the solver to insert a word space is a wordplay operation just as much as anagramming or deletions etc., and so requires an indicator.
I think the Goodliffean sense is so much a part of basic clueing that it barely needs a name, but the splitting-a-word sense definitely does.
e.g. when you see the word "not" in a clue and the setter expects you to read it as "no T" (letter deletion), or the clue starts "Hatchback" and it turns out that "Hatch" is the definition and "back" part of the wordplay.
