Disturbances are projected to increase across the century in European forests because of climate-change 🔥🌬️🪲

This comes with challenges and opportunities 🪵🌱

Have a look at our massive new research greatly led by Marc Grünig, Werner Rammer & @rupertseidl.bsky.social 👇

The future of Europe’s forest disturbance regimes– a thread.

Tl, dr: Disturbances from wildfire, bark beetles & wind will continue to increase in the coming decades. Under unabated climate change disturbances could more than double by 2100.

What we found:
- Fire is projected to increase across European biomes;🌍
- The Mediterranean region had the strongest increase in burned area and total forest damage 🔥
- Because higher stocks, temperate forests will suffer higher level of forest damage for the same relative increase in burned area 🪾

We expect climate change to affect fire regimes in Europe 🔥but how will those changes impact forest vegetation? 🌲 This is still poorly understood, especially in regions not commonly subject to fires yet

We explored this question in the freshly published chapter of my PhD Follow up in the comments 👇

Calling on all forest disturbance experts: Please consider contributing to our study on global forest disturbance change, and help resolve the nuances of changing forest disturbance regimes. More details and survey here: www.lss.ls.tum.de/edfm/disturb...

All climate projections do not show any mercy in predicting future wildfires seasons in Europe.

Forest management can play a major role in mitigating the large negative consequences of fires, but planning and prevention is crucial.

"This year, I think my family will survive the heat wave. Next year? The one after that?"

Very thoughtful reflection I completely feel myself aligned with

Do trait–growth relationships vary with plant age in fire-prone heathland shrubs?

🌱New study reveals functional traits e.g. wood density & leaf mass fraction shape plant growth rates, with these relationships changing as plants mature. Growth isn't a fixed trait–it evolves with age! @lilydun.bsky.social @ianjwright.bsky.social🧪🌍

I wonder how a sink increase of ~20Mt is possible in the year (2018) where the forests among the most stocked in the country (North-east alps) where hit by the biggest windstorms of the century (Vaia, ~10Mm3 of damaged wood if I recall correctly) ??

Publishers are selling papers to train AIs — and making millions of dollars Generative-AI models require massive amounts of data — scholarly publishers are licensing their content to train them.

Publishers ask science to pay for their services, and then sell the very same work they didn’t pay anything for to AI companies for million of dollars ?!

I find this so wrong on so many levels.. and a real threat to science itself! Is it only me?

It was a really though job carrying around a huge metal sling to collect canopy leaves and measure their traits, among sweat, mud and ant bites! (pic for reference)

6 year ago I spent 5 months sampling leaves in Ivory Coast.
That was my MSc thesis, I would have never though back then that this work would have ended up in Nature!

Greatly led by @jeaggu.bsky.social!!
