Her most famous work I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969) tells her life story up to age 17, and illustrates how literature helped Maya overcome racism and trauma. It’s widely used in schools and universities worldwide (despite many attempts to ban it). #blackhistorymonth
MAYA ANGELOU 📚
Maya Angelou was a poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist born in St. Louis, Missouri. She’s published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry.
(Side note: This portrait was so hard! most pictures of her are in black and white, and while most of them suggest she had brown/black hair, I see most people depicting her with blonde hair in the image I’m referencing. Lol, the joys of portrait work!) #blackhistorymonth #kidlit
Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a singer, songwriter, and guitarist known as the “Godmother of Rock-And-Roll.” She’s one of the first gospel musicians to become a major recording artist. She influenced early rock n roll musicians like Tina Turner, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley.

Colorful kidlit holiday illustration comic character sketch by Sadee Schilling of two tweens dressed festively in homemade “ugly sweaters.” The girl wears a pink, red and white sporty-style jacket that has been newly styled with large red buttons, red and white striped twine, and gold star buttons at the sleeves. She has stars in her auburn hair, ribbons spilling from the pocket of her blue cargo pants, and is holding a homemade wreath made of buttons. The boy elbows her playfully as he makes his sweater jingle—it is covered in golden bells with green striped ribbons and a tinsel Christmas tree decorated in buttons. He also wears greenery as “antlers” and a “belt” of golden tinsel tied jauntily around his waist.
Happy holiday festive time! For #kidlitartpostcard I drew the main characters from my tween graphic novel project in crafty “ugly sweaters.” They’re both collectors, so I imagined them laughing in a corner of the secondhand shop where she works, sifting through old buttons.
