Librarians are called groomers for defending the right to read, including books that might feature, gasp, queer folks

Meanwhile, old, adult, conservatives are lamenting that 15 year olds aren't getting pregnant

On national television

As if that isn't fucking gross

Our culture is fucked

Full disclosure - they asked for an R&R for one of my YA books and wanted me to cut a pivotal scene in a hotel room that was not sexual in any way just because it was “in a hotel room.” I told my agent no f-ing way & turned down the offer. I hate that they’re doing the book banners’ job for them. 🤬

This is all to say that if you are in the query trenches for the second, third, or fourth time, don’t despair.

Most of your favorite authors went through the same process before they found success. You will get there too! ❤️

Talk to seasoned authors with multiple published books and you’ll often hear the same story. They wrote and queried many books before they got an agent.

Writing craft is a thing that grows over time. Most people have to learn what their voice is. What category and genre best fits the story they want to tell.

This often takes a lot of time, work, and often multiple books to get it right.

Let’s have a chat about realistic expectations re: querying…

Over the years, I’ve seen people post about getting an offer of rep after writing one book and querying only 20 agents.

Is this possible? Yep. Is it common? I’d say most likely not.

Here’s why…

Copy editors and proofreaders are often the unsung heroes of publishing, says the writer who can’t remember what eye color she gave to a minor character. 🤪

Chicago Turns All Public School IDs Into Library Cards To Boost Student Access Chicago Public Library and CPS announced the expansion of The 81 Club, building on a pilot launched in 2022 to give students access to the library system's vast collection and databases.

This is such a good idea. We should do this in NYC.

"All Chicago Public Schools students now have access to nearly everything the city’s libraries have to offer — including physical items like books as well as extensive digital resources."

Authors (especially women): Please stop apologizing for promoting your books. You created an incredible piece of art. You SHOULD BE shouting about it from the rooftops as much as you want. It’s a lifetime achievement, and anyone belittling you for doing promo has issues with themselves not you.

Also, if you say someone’s writing sounds like AI, it’s because those stupid machines were trained using OUR STOLEN WORK, so that’s why it sounds like our voice.

If you accuse writers of using AI based on grammar choices, I’m going to immediately believe you don’t know jack about how much of AI has stolen & been trained using original work without given any compensation to writers.

This is such a load of nonsense. I commented on the post, but it’s so disheartening to see the number of people who believe what he’s claiming.

It’s NOT COMMON PRACTICE for agents or editors to reach out to writers unsolicited. The scammy emails spoofing addresses for agents & editors look real but they’re not. If you’re concerned, reach out to seasoned professionals & ask for clarity. Protect yourself & approach these emails with caution.

So many times we writers are hard on ourselves, especially when it comes to our craft, but I’m going through copy edits right now for my book that’s out in September, and I’m going to own the fact that I am really damn proud of this book!😊

I wrote two books inspired by badass women in history.

NBS: Inspired by Lillian Boyer a female wingwalker in the 1920s.

AABS: Inspired by Dr. Lucy Wanzer, the first woman to get her medical degree west of the Rockies in 1876. She changed the course of women in medicine in San Francisco.

I really need Michael B. Jordan to win the Oscar. His performance in Sinners was transcendent, and TC’s Marty Supreme, IMO, was nothing but another treatise on how narcissistic, selfish men will screw everything in their life to achieve their own pathetic goals.
