FYI: For folks in Taiwan who want a dedicated earthquake alert app beyond the government mobile alerts, KNY is quite useful. Be sure to adjust the settings to your location and notification preferences (otherwise youโll get loud alerts for even the baby quakes).

Woke me up, for sure! Though there was no mobile alert for that one. Last nightโs earthquake in the north had an alert and was a little more shaky!
Big jolt of an aftershock. Hoping we just get that one and we are done for the night!
My unbotheredness seems to have gotten left behind in Taipei because we so rarely feel them in Taitung despite getting the alerts. In fact, Iโd just been thinking the other day about how long itโs been since Iโve felt one. Maybe I should have knocked on wood!
Centered in Beinan, Taitung, just up the road from me. I was in the middle of teaching an online class and fear I embarrassed myself with how scared I was!
Centered right here. No wonder it scared the hell out of me. Just did a walk around the house picking things up. What a shaker!
Huge in Taitung. Biggest one Iโve felt in ages. Stuff fell off shelves.
HUGE earthquake in Taitung just now. Iโm shivering from the fright.
Got this disaster preparedness booklet dropped into my mailbox this morning, and its pleasing design made its anxiety-inducing contents slightly more palatable. ๐ฌ
Huh. Today I learned.
Our warning was for 150 km/h winds, which is apparently off the Beaufort Scale.
Seems like the eye is making its way through now, and then itโll be getting rough again.

Keep getting these typhoon wind warnings. Finally went to the website explaining the scale โ weโre at level 14, which sounds about right based on the racket that wind outside is making. Stuff strewn all over the street outside my house already.

Turns out this warning was warranted. The rain is alright but the wind out there is fierce right now. Sounds like a plane taking off over and over. Strongest typhoon Iโve experienced in some years. Power is flickering.
My storm-chasing friends have a live feed from SE Taiwan right now of the landfall of typhoon #11

Yep! Taitung government called off work and school last night. Already been raining heavily and a little windy. Long hours ahead!
Professional snake catcher retrieving a snake from under a piece of furniture in kitchen
The typhoon day started off with a surprise in my kitchen! ๐
Thank goodness for a good landlord who has a snake guy on speed dial. Didnโt like the part where I had to help lift the furniture to get the rest of it loose, but thankful itโs gone now. *shudder*
11/22/63 by Stephen King is quite good.
First time seeing this particular warning during a typhoon. This one is shaping up to be a biggie.

Donghe seems a lot less calm but still not too bad: www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3KJ...
Seems unlikely, so far!
Live stream from Taitung, Taiwan โ no obvious tsunami waves so far. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqS_...
A screen capture from TVBS News showing the sea and a rocky beach with two rescue workers and a dog in the foreground and around 8 people watching for the tsunami to arrive.
Crossposted from TVBS on Threads: the scene in Hualien, Taiwan, as the tsunami from the M8.8 earthquake in Kamchatka arrives.
Surprised those folks are allowed to stay there.
Tsunami warning for Taiwan:
Less than 30cm for northern Taiwan
30cm to 1 meter for southern Taiwan
Tsunami estimated to arrive at about 12:40 in Hokkaido (Sapporo). 1pm in Niigata. Just before 2pm in Okinawa (Naha I guess).
Taiwan: 1:19pm local time in Hualien, 1:24 in Taitung, 1:52pm in Keelung, 2:06pm in Kaohsiung.

Well spotted.
A little rattle down here in Taitung. First time getting the mobile earthquake alert in a couple of months. Could tell it was local before the data was published because there wasnโt a peep on my timeline about it. XD

In his younger days, and now graying and losing his hair. His ears are always the first thing people comment on!
I have a mix (heโs half Schnauzer with a Schnauzer face and hair and the rest Formosan Mountain Dog, including huge pointy ears), and heโs the loveliest dog Iโve ever known. Heโs 16 now and I donโt know if Iโll ever have another dog, but if I do, Iโll absolutely adopt another Formosan/Formosan mix.
