Because surprises usually came from the white coat people, who rattled off numbers she never understood. The same people smiled when she didn’t cry, called her a good girl, and offered a selection of sticky-sweet lollipops before she departed. So a surprise from her mother? That had to be super worth it! “Mommy?” she piped up after washing and redressing. “Was… was I a good girl?” Ifalna looked at her—almost through her—then a tender smile warmed her face. “Of course you are.”
