#Bioacoustics formed a big part of last week's Sutherland field trip. Students recorded birds on @openacousticdevices.info #Audiomoths (analysed with @chirpity-nocmig.bsky.social), used heterodyne bat detectors and set a PIPPYG by the digs - with Common Pipistrelles on both.

⭐ Happy #Mar10Day! Being nerds in general, we owe a lot of our passion in gadgets and finding the right fit for your project to the guy who risked everything just to be told to go to another castle. 🍄
In spring 2025, artists Mikel R. Nieto and Illart Alkorta began a series of recordings in ponds and wetlands in Igeldo–Igara (Basque Country), studying the southern frog’s song and its relationship with the environment.

AudioMoth is an acoustic recording device that captures sounds from the surrounding environment and applies recognition models to detect and identify. Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park was selected for the use of this technology due to the high abundance of Acrididae species recorded within the area.
Alright! Getting this year off to a fine start with a much-overdue post on the data science blog examining false colour spectrum analysis of soundscapes.

BirdNET has been a huge leap forward in #bioacoustics. Analysis from the WABAD collaboration, shows high precision (proportion of predictions that are correct) though modest recall (proportion of calls detected). Predictive power is highest in Europe, N. America and Oceania.

Comparison of SD card energy consumption.
The variation between different makes and models of SD card is huge - some can use 5 to 6 times as much energy as others.

❄️ Over 5,900 hours of #acoustic #data collected during two winter seasons (2018–2020) in three #Natura2000 sites were used to assess hunting pressure on the vulnerable Red-breasted Goose (𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢 𝘳𝘶𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘴).

I’m so excited to open this package!
A huge thank you to Prof. Alex Rogers for generously donating #AudioMoth acoustic detectors to support post–Hurricane Melissa wildlife surveys. These units will be deployed in the field over the coming weeks to complement the other equipment already in use.
If you’ve ever logged data to an SD card or saved files on a #microcontroller, you've probably used FatFs without realizing it. As I'm working on a port for it, I'm reminded what a great embedded #OpenSource project looks like.
