Jürgen Habermas Shaped the Postwar Order — His Death Must Not Mark Its End The greatest democratic theorist of the postwar era leaves behind a world dismantling everything he defended.

A bit late, but here is my remembrance celebrating Habermas and his work after his passing on Saturday. He will be missed, now more than ever

Just finished The Picnic by @matthewblongo.bsky.social.

A sharp, compelling take on the opening of the Iron Curtain, especially valuable for centering the Hungarian perspective, not just the familiar GDR story we all know.

Adds real depth to how 1989 is usually told.

A brilliant must read.

Happy New Year peeps…

To keep the tradition going, here is my pile of reading for the year. Same rules as always - only literature (so no philosophy or politics). Some classics, some re-reads; all for fun…

What’ve you been reading?!?!?

Brilliant game … Living in Europe, I had the perverse experience of waking up only to find the game still going, and thus found myself surreptitiously checking the scores while pretending to ready the kids for school…

I love good baseball writing. Thanks for sharing… my favorite line: “Baseball is a daily puzzle that requires multiple players to perform deeds in concert and in a palatable order to achieve the one thing everyone wants: to go home.”

Excellent review by @matthewblongo.bsky.social (author The Picnic, which won the Orwell Prize given by @orwellprize.bsky.social last year) of the superb recent @stanfordpress.bsky.social book by Ed Pulford (& discusses the same author’s earlier Hurst book too) lareviewofbooks.org/article/an-a...
