Those were more because the consoles weren't properly designed for the heat and thermals they had (and also ran on PowerPC for their CPUs which added grease to the fire)

N64 by comparison used a standard MIPS architecture that was pretty common for devices back then. the PSX used a MIPS processor as well.
N64 just had a RDP designed by SGI. Former employees of them later founded ATI, which powered the Flipper GPU in the GameCube.
I presume it's more because PowerPC was hitting its stride as a RISC architecture in 1999. PowerPC was used in Macintosh computers at that time, and had a lot of benefits for low-level programming/efficiency.
Unfortunately by the 2000s those chips had power/heat issues and became impractical.
wojak in the thumbnail can I get a heeeellllllllll no
I think even Nintendo started to shift away from SGIs proprietary tools by the latter half of the N64's lifespan and started to use better/more universal tools such as the GCC compiler and a windows based SDK
oh 100%. From my memory, the SGI documentation was all in English and Nintendo needed a specific SGI support team because the documentation wasn't translated to Japanese.
It's also why I think Rare and Nintendo had the relationship they had in the N64 era especially.
Kaze is an insanely talented programmer, but at the same time everything he makes is a byproduct of modern research and what we understand *now* of the N64's chipset and the SM64 source code in a lower pressure hobbyist environment.
I think it's just laughably wrong. I think a lot of people misunderstand what "bad code" means. It can mean a lot of things and it's almost always reduced to "I saw a video essay explain why it's bad"
*more optimal GCC compiler to clarify I typed this very quickly, my bad
decomp using a modern compilers (clang) rather than the older outdated SGI IDO compilers. Even Nintendo later switched to a more optimal clang compiler by the time Paper Mario was out
I mean I don't even think it's a curse to SM64 so much as it Nintendo playing safe
For the most part, sm64 runs pretty well for a title of its time, minus some unoptimized geometry that I presume was early design choices (such as the submarine)
not to mention there's performance boosts from the-
furthermore for a Japanese speaking studio that only got english documentation for their next launch systems chipset they did pretty fucking good with the code LMAOOOOOOOO
People really hear that SM64 was compiled without the -O2 optimizer from a video essay and assume that the games code isn't "optimized"
Like for a launch title programmed nothing like Nintendo's previous titles I don't exactly blame them for choosing to omit optimizations they'd have to bugtest LOL

after reading that email I did probably the most spot on impression of Krusty from the Simpsons laughing out of frustration and had to sit in disbelief at that instead of the rejection

I think it'd be crazy to see how Wayne's World was translated specifically
one of my friends in a VC showed me classified and I was like "yeah I know her she's cool as fuck" and they were like "OH SHIT SHE??"

the blessing of art is that you can make what YOU want. when your statement is "I hate what others make because I don't agree with/understand it", I find it deeply saddening that talent is wasted
mostly notice it in sonic-adjacent circles but I think it's a general online fandom problem
i think it's depressing seeing people who have the abilities to draw and then waste it on drawing things designed to put down others they disagree with rather than using the medium to express themselves or what they care about
I always thought wario apparition was funny more than it was creepy
like the first render here combined with the audio was fucking hilarious to me, but then I noticed it slowly shifted from that to more silent hill-y renditions of beytah content

Xenia the fox just woke up, looking groggy. Coffee mug reads "Don't talk to me until I fix this broken Xorg update [Arch Linux logo]", and the oversized t-shirt reads "this cat's name is [bash fork bomb] you should type his name on your linux's terminal (don't do that)"
She spent the evening debugging something
I'm not even sure what the "infamy" was and I knew you during that period. people were just being really weird and terminally online towards you
I feel like it's impossible to be a contrarian about a movie where the viewpoints are either "THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER" or "Shakespeares urn will become a turbine generator if it saw the galaxy movie"
idk if it's your style of humor but I think it's one of the funniest shows to watch sober and/or high
(read this in a carl athf voice for the full effect)
I don't even care anymore. sure, whatever
