Chomsky wrote about this in context of Smiths opinion on labor division. I always assumed that they just edited the index to "hide" the word, but I didn't know that the text is literally altered.

This is more frustrating than simply quoting out of context. That happens all the time. In this case, the passage was *altered*. There were literally words and clauses omitted that were not only not flagged, but that significantly changed the *meaning* of the quoted passage.

Local bookshop has a Penguin Classics shelf placed enticingly at the entrance, so I impulse bought Meditations by Marcus Aurelius.

Ngl kinda tempted to read Stirner, because his ideas sound so absurd that I wonder whether they are even more unhinged or actually sensible in the book, although I have every reason to suspect the former.

Marmeladov in Crime and Punishment is not very timshel.

That's an interesting example. That also reminds me how turning the other cheek is often nowadays interpreted as an act of pacifism while some sources suggest that at that time it meant that you're not afraid and ready to stand up for yourself

It's indeed fascinating. From my recent reading East of Eden by John Steinbeck has an interesting example of such change in a text. In translations of the Bible in the story of Cain and Abel "thou mayest" became "thou shalt" which in turn became "do thou" which all alter the meaning of the story

Isn't it Orwellian that Adam Smiths Wealth of Nations, the most influential book about free market, has been edited in reprints to highlight opinions that fit more into capitalist doctrine?

The latter. The text of the original post should probably have been clearer on that.

I'm reading Chomsky and the book mentions Sacco and Vanzetti, and it's funny that the only reason I know about them is MGS:V Ground Zeroes

I find it quite frustrating that EU states are more willing to implement mass surveillance that to finally leave Daylight Saving Time in the past

Wake-on-LAN feels like magic. I tap on my phone screen and suddenly my PC wakes to life. And it's surprising how simple the protocol is.

I wonder if first use of the word can be traced down. It does fit the logic of Newspeak though. Newspeak already has noun unperson. Also IMO whole Newspeak feels awkward.

"Unalive" fits Orwellian Newspeak so perfectly it's not even funny

Also title track and Song to Say Goodbye. The latter has especially beautiful lyrics. Lyrics are for me probably the best thing about Placebo. They are always so poetic and I adore them every listen despite hearing them many times already.

Reading East of Eden made me based and timshel-pilled.

It's indeed underrated. Probably because songs on the album require a couple of listens before they really hit unlike Every You Every Me or Bitter End

It has become a recurring pattern that the moment the spring is breaking I become immediately obsessed with Placebo

@iltalehti.fi näköjään pyytää 1.99€/kk, jos ei halua seuranta ja/tai mainosevästeitä. Valitettavasti tämä taitaa olla laillista. Jos jokainen käyttämäni palvelu pyytää saman verran, kasvaa kuukausittainen lasku aika suureksi. Onneksi on olemassa selainlaajennuksia, jotka putsaavat evästeitä.

Tired: Reading 1984 because it's great social commentary and shows dangers of surveillance and erosion of freedom of thought.
Wired: Reading 1984 because Placebo song is based on it and for Winston and Julias romance arc.

That's not the point of the book but reading East of Eden makes me really thankful for modern medicine. So many characters in the book died from nowadays completely preventable disease.

AI kupla taitaa olla yksi syistä miksi Nvidian Linux-tuki on parantunut. Datakeskukset tunnetusti pyörii Linuxilla ja AI pyörii Nvidian näytönohjaimilla

Itse vaihdoin AMD:n näyttiksiin aikoinaan siitä syystä että Linux tuki on niin paljon parempi, mutta nykyään kuulemma Nvidian tuki on yllättävän hyvä koska ajureiden toiminnallisuudesta on aika paljon siirretty näytönohjaimen firmwareen
