In case you thought audiobooks were new, 'Reading Aloud' was painted by Airdrie artist John Levack (1823-1874) artuk.org/discover/art...
His layering of colour under the black to intensify the shadows was so subtle, its use was queried by both the block-maker and a book reviewer: ‘It made great use of drawing in red and yellow under the black. The effect was very subtle and clever, but quite invisible'.

'Zohara', published in 1961 by Secker & Warburg, is set in a Spanish village where the locals are afraid of a suspected witch. The atmosphere of the novel is produced with just three colours, black, pink & yellow, over white paper. By combining pink & yellow, Russ produced the red of the shawls.
For today's @artukdotorg #OnlineArtExchange, we're exploring books to celebrate the opening of our new exhibition, 'Lady Chatterley’s Cover: The Book Designs of Stephen Russ'. This work can be seen on display in 'Lady Chatterley’s Cover', open until Saturday 30 May 2026.
A group of adults and children read books together in a cozy room surrounded by bookshelves and vintage printing equipment, with posters and machinery in the background, evoking a warm, nostalgic atmosphere.
