White woman tears strike again #Traitors

Sorry if I’m starting discourse but… how much of the Heated Rivalry craze is just white women yearning for unattainable gay men? Like is this just a show for those girlies who fantasized about emo gay boys in the early aughts? (Still haven’t seen so genuine questions!)

In the words of a former colleague, I “dodged a bullet.” You should too! Don’t apply to this job.

What does it say about a program/department that they’ve had to advertise more or less the same job 3 years in a row?

For the record, this year’s Society of Dix-neuviémistes conference theme of “health and happiness” is so clearly up my alley that it is all the more devastating to be outside of academia right now.

Is it me or is this year’s French studies job market the worst in a while? MLA job list only shows 20 positions with the word “French” included in the ad, and at least one of those 20 is actually for German literary studies.

Or, will old guard snob-ism maintain and continue to disenfranchise a new generation of scholars?

But given our context, it can’t be reasonable to expect everyone will succeed at maintaining employment in the coming academic year. So, who is going to be brave enough to employ those who had to find other ways to make ends meet?

Given the hiring freezes and economic uncertainty, I wonder if universities/departments will be more understanding next year of applicants whose CVs reflect a gap in academic work. General wisdom says a year without an academic job will reflect poorly if not shut the door completely.

I am once again asking centrist Dems to TAKE THE NOTE and support policies that are actually popular like universal healthcare

There’s a lot of unknown lore in this post that has me like 👀

NCFS folks! I’m thinking about organizing a panel on comedy/humor for next year’s conference. Especially satire, caricature/early BD, vaudeville, etc. Who should I reach out to?

That said, if you read my follow up post, it does appear that Hartman is using “sexual” in the way that I intend the word, though likely not limited to that usage either.

Hi! We don’t know each other, so I want to assume good intent. However, phrases like “101” and telling someone to look up a word can come across as condescending. Please keep this in mind if you’d like to stay in touch.

PPS let’s marvel for a moment at having a genuine academic convo online 🥹

YES. Absolutely. Her observation about there not being an autobiography of a woman who survived the Middle Passage echoes that point.

That makes sense. And then I guess I can understand its usage with “economy” as a space/system in which one fulfills their lack (desire) through a variety of exchanges.

Wait, Hartman goes on to discuss the example of James Barbot, who wrote about how it was "difficult to exercise sexual restraint on the slave ship" - so perhaps she does mean libidinal as sex drive. Still, I frequently struggle with the phrase "libidinal economy" so insights are welcome :)

Can someone smarter than me help me understand the word "libidinal" beyond "related to the libido"? Rereading Saidiya Harman's "Venus in Two Acts"; page 5: "The libidinal investment in violence is everywhere apparent in the documents..."
This doesn't seem related to libido-as-sex-drive. Help?

Hi folks 😊 my bio does most of the intro for me, but in addition I guess I’ll say I’m a specialist in histories of race, sentimentalism, science & tech studies, and a bit of enlightenment philosophy. I’m also a gym rat, a lover of drag, and perpetually snarky.
