I really think more of us would benefit from approaching the work like athletes and sports teams.

A person literally crawled across the finish line at the Boston Marathon. Salute.
We don’t have to be swole to be part of the swoletariat.
W.E.B. Du Bois regularly walked several miles. Angela Y. Davis ran and does yoga. Toni Cade Bambara danced and took trapeze lessons. Ho Chi Minh lifted light weights. And Lula does functional training—and livestreams his workouts, lol.
Meet the women of Philly's 40+ Double Dutch Club. ❤️❤️❤️

A college basketball player didn’t know how to ride a bike. So, his teammates taught him. Watch them cheer him on.

All I wanted is for The Atlantic to stop publishing anti-leftist and anti-DEI screeds, not for it to be sued by Kash Patel.
Spring semester is almost over and I'm so excited for the finish line.
Did you see what happened at the Delaware Marathon? There are a couple of life lessons here.

Like Ryan Coogler said, “What I’m trying to do is just stay engaged as an artist and stay engaged as a member of the communities I’m involved with... every day I wake up, I get to contribute. So, that’s kind of what I focus on."
And “I try to protect my love for what I do, as best I can.”
Happy Boston Marathon Day to all who observe!
I'm not running but I root for runners, especially first-time racers. And I'm so happy that today's weather forecast has changed to sunshine!
I know that “If you’re looking, you’re not cooking” is about BBQ, but I’m gonna repeat it to myself as I try to reduce my screen time, lol.
Toni Morrison on how teaching and libraries are similar. “As a teacher, one has to demand the participation of the student. A good teacher helps you teach yourself. That’s what the library does. It helps you teach yourself. It makes us all autodidacts, in a way. You have to find your way. There’s some guidance, there’s some information, there’s somebody to lead. But there’s no one to simply tell you all you need to know. That’s the best kind of teaching, and that’s what the library can do.”

Toni Morrison said that teaching ”means removing cataracts and opening doors and stirring up an unsettling a little bit.”
@prisonculture.bsky.social In Toni Morrison’s interview about the New York Public Library, she noted how it‘s world-famous and used by people from all over the world. Made me think of how it‘s part of what makes NYC a global city but different from many of such institutions cuz it’s public and free.
Toni Morrison said, “I am a writer. It is my determination to write texts that appeal to all kinds of people, viscerally and intellectually. To provide no escape from certain kinds of realizations, and at the same time to provide a certain kind of welcome and hope… to anyone who wants to step in.”
Asked what made him try playwriting, James Baldwin replied, "To see if I could." 2026 energy.
Shout out to the title whisperers and editors, the people who help us come up with compelling titles. Some make history. Like the one who renamed Carol Hanisch’s “Some Thoughts in Response to Dottie’s Thoughts on a Women’s Liberation Movement” as “The Personal is Political,” lol.
In honor of National Library Week, an extensive video interview with Toni Morrison about the New York Public Library.
And Morrison's 2018 statement "Tell City Leaders to Invest in Libraries."

Sending rejection letters when she was an editor, Toni Morrison emphasized, according to Melina Moe, readers needing “both drama and organization, the space and information to make discoveries themselves yet a clear enough path so as not to feel lost.” This is also a good approach to teaching.
While they have different projects, Joe Mazzulla’s approach to sports and coaching is reminiscent of Toni Morrison’s point that being an adult “means growth, taking on responsibilities, stop bitching about it, always.” In this essay, I...
Joe Mazzulla on how winning involves practicing losing well.
"Do you, like, just curl up into a ball and start bitching and crying about it and like, quit that round... if you're not aware and can't surrender to the fact that you could fail at it, then I don't think you're really on the journey."
Signed up for a Spartan race, which will be the most physically and mentally challenging race I've registered for. I wanna see if I can do it. I also wanna practice handling if I can't finish it. Part of my aging plan is working on losing well. I've got three months to train.
In 2023, Zohran Mamdani biked 40 miles one day, which is a serious workout. That’s it, lol.
No shade but a lot of social justice discourse that I agree with in terms of its intentions often paint in broad strokes what x, y, or z group politically cares about, when those trying to win elections are often doing a deeper dive and more familiar with the details and contradictions among people.
Interesting and informative article about a Latinx Congressional candidate who is critical of current immigration enforcement but socially conservative.
From it, I learned about Koch-backed LIBRE, which is impacting policy and elections among Latinx communities.

I love how Joe Mazzulla balances a thirst for winning with understanding life is bigger than sports.
Years ago I decided to make a priority in my teaching explaining what government is and how it shapes sociological patterns. Discourse from the left about the state and from the right about “the government” can both obscure, in various ways, some of the details about how government shapes our lives.
Even while struggling to ride a bike while having on my arm a heavy grocery bag—which I’m calling a ruck, lol—I had the energy to flirt with a cute construction worker. This is why we train at the gym.
I was reading about a man who’d be at the gym six days a week early in the morning, planned his workouts in his travel schedule, and cut out personal activities except for watching SportsCenter so he could have more time to think. I didn’t like all of his policies but I respect that, Barack Obama.
A lot of progressives are into eugenics.
