Fridays I'm in Love

We welcomed Chicago's esteemed Friday Club @newberrylibrary.bsky.social yesterday, and a bespoke woven portfolio set with printed ribbons marking their 1898 gift to the library was my favorite! Full of chromolithographs of ceramics, it marked the start of a beautiful friendship!

A plug for a good site many haven't used before - Biblio.com. Not as big as ABEbooks, but a better advanced used & rare books interface & more tools to block particular sellers of Print on demand/crap copies. ABE seems to have copied some features, but Biblio does it better.

Anthropic destroyed millions of print books to build its AI models Company hired Google's book-scanning chief to cut up and digitize "all the books in the world."

There's been some buzz on used & rare bookseller lists about Alibris orders suddenly increasing - the speculation is that it's companies feeding AI Models. If so, those books are likely being destroyed and pose long term copyright issues #Usedbooks #AI #copyright

For books that are hard to find / too damn pricey, I find putting a saved search want up on eBay and waiting like a bibliophilic crocodile til someone posts a cheap one has some success.

Books there often go too high or too low.

Yes. In fact, If I know who they are, I try and get them my name. I've gotten a few good hauls that way. Some the clearance folks have a good eye for books, and I am sure other things as well not in my wheelhouse.

I bought books from a hoarder's house & the family told me they had found over 3000 USD of coins in jars all over the house.

You bet they looked thru every book I took to make sure there wasn't cash inside. None was found but they did find a couple checks for a few hundred they could get re-issued.

I get calls late on a Thursday: "my parents' house has been sold & new owners are taking possession Monday morning. Can you come & get the (2000, 3000, 4000) books before they throw them in the dumpster?"
If I CAN go, I get some things, or I call colleagues & we all descend. But a ton get binned.

Was a beautiful day in Brighton today. I did my usual second-hand bookstore circuit for the first time in a few months and found some neat things, but no Star Trek pickups.

However, it got me feeling down about how many great bookshops we've lost… 🧵/1

Cheshire-based @matthewspalmer.bsky.social was rather excited when a new fantasy-focused bookshop opened in a nearby village. Just before Christmas, he met with the owner, Abby Munro, and spoke about the journey to opening Paper+Word.

If you are only now learning about THE WESTING GAME, written by Ellen Raskin in 1979 & winner of a Newbery Medal, find it and read it NOW.

It's the best puzzle mystery novel ever, and is illustrated and typeset by Raskin herself (who started as an illustrator and book cover designer)

Another gripe - why do folks underline almost an ENTIRE page? Doesn't that kill the effectiveness of focusing on a passage? A post-it note is far better. Then you don't have to grumble about the bookseller paying you less for a book cuz it's marked up like an F1 track after a race.

Not sure why booksellers asking high dollar for books they say are 1st editions and take a ton of pictures, yet not ANY images of the copyright page - the one page that has the most convincing info of a first printing in most cases. Seems damn odd to me.

We often get offers to advertise in broad markets. However, used book selling is odd. Broad advertising results in MORE books being offered to us & very few sales. A great idea if you need stock, not so much if there's already 75+ boxes on the floor & 12 more in your car.
