We are recruiting 1-2 postdoctoral fellows to investigate the specificity of human anti-influenza virus antibodies, and to determine how these antibodies impact global antigenic drift of influenza viruses.

Official ASV statement on the passing of Dr. Michael Bishop.
ASV remembers Dr. J. Michael Bishop, a luminary in virology, upon his passing earlier this month.
This phenotype is largely driven by a single S2 mutation, I692V, which induces conformational instability in spike and promotes spontaneous S1 shedding. Our findings help explain why this highly concerning mink-associated variant failed to spread widely in animals and humans.
Led by Julia and Pei in the lab, our new PNAS paper reveals that the mink Cluster 5 (MC5V) SARS-CoV-2 spike is intrinsically unstable and defective in processing, resulting in markedly attenuated infectivity and fusogenicity. www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1...

May be related to the increased conformational stability of spike induced by these NTD mutations, correlating with decreased fusion and infectivity journals.asm.org/doi/full/10....
I wanted to remind everyone about the "Save AIDS Research" livestream that will go live on YouTube this Tuesday (9/16) at 11:00am EDT. We have an amazing program of 70+ speakers who will be sharing their latest research. Get all the details at www.saveaidsresearch.org.
We mourn the passing of Nobel laureate David Baltimore, a towering figure in molecular biology and virology, and a pioneer and founder of ASV. His discoveries transformed science and medicine, and his mentorship inspired generations. His legacy will continue to guide and inspire virology and ASV.
As RFK testifies in front of the Senate today, ASV wants to emphasize the risks posed by his decisions related to virus outbreaks and the public health of Americans. Together with our partner organizations, we call for RFK's resignation: asm.org/press-releas...
An incredible episode: Stanley Plotkin joins TWiV to recount his career as a vaccinologist, having participated in the development of vaccines for polio, rabies, and rubella, and his thoughts on the current anti-science, anti-public health, and anti-vaccine climate. www.microbe.tv/twiv/

Years of research show protection from COVID-19 vaccines — both the types made with mRNA and a type made with traditional technology — does wane over time. The vaccinations provide the strongest protection against severe infection and death, even if people still become infected.
I am honored to serve as president of the American society for Virology, thank you for your support. I wish to thank our past president Hector Aguilar-Carreno for a wonderful service and look forward to working with everyone.

A wonderful talk by @shanluliu.bsky.social at #ASV2025 about viral cell-cell transmission. Thank you for the shout out to our deltaE SARS-CoV-2 preprint!
Congratulations to Michael and also Harmit! Hutch is indeed a unique place. I learned a lot from the Thursday morning virology meeting and truly enjoyed the Friday afternoon seminars and beer hours.

Our new work: ZIKV infection induces autophagy which mediates the downregulation of host entry factors TIM-1 and AXL. This, in turn, promotes sustained ZIKV infection by preventing superinfection and dampening the host innate immunity. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
Hi Michael, sorry missing the party due to travels, congratulations on your retirement! Thank you for your support of me and scientific community.
