Thankfully, there are sports organisations and athletes that are rallying together to take on high-carbon sponsorship in sport.

From the US Open to the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground, JP Morgan Chase is one of the largest sponsors in sport.
But why invest so much in sports advertising in particular?
Because the spectacle of sport provides the perfect distraction from the bank's business choices. 🤥

These polluting projects threaten Indigenous Amazon communities while wreaking havoc on the world's most biodiverse region.
In a recent report, the Ecologist has outlined the scale of destruction in the Amazon. 👇

Research from @stand.earth also reveals that, of JP Morgan Chase's fossil fuel financing, they have invested the most in oil and gas projects in the Amazon. 💰💨

Each year, JPMorgan Chase releases a climate report where the bank acknowledges the relationship between climate breakdown and the world economy.
🛢️ Despite this, the bank remains the largest financier of new fossil fuel projects globally - investing $191.2 billion since 2021.

🚨 Sportswash alert 🚨
JPMorgan Chase is in talks with the International Olympic Committee to sponsor the 2028 LA Olympics.
Like all sportswashers, the bank aims to use the Games to distract from its environmental and social harm.
Here's a reminder. 🧵 1/6
This year's Milan-Cortina Winter Games promised to be the “most sustainable ever”. 🤔
In a new documentary, Matt Rendell reveals just how misleading that claim was - from backing Italy’s largest oil company to felling ancient trees for the event.

The report’s message is clear:
Volvo Group must:
👉 Support stronger climate rules — not weaken them
👉 Align all lobbying with the Paris Agreement
👉 Be transparent about political influence

History offers a warning.
Companies like Nokia and Kodak failed to adapt to major tech shifts around camera smartphones - and paid the price.
The transition to electric transport is happening now.
The question is whether Volvo leads or lags.
8/9
There’s a bigger risk here.
Businesses need stable, long-term rules to invest in clean technology.
By lobbying against those rules, Volvo is undermining:
🔴 Climate progress
🔴 Public health
🔴 Its own future competitiveness
7/9
🇪🇺 In the EU, Volvo has lobbied for “flexibility” in CO₂ standards for trucks.
As a result, there will now be up to 25% fewer electric trucks by 2030 - and pressure to weaken targets even sooner.
6/9
And the contradictions don’t stop there.
In 2023, Volvo signed an agreement to accelerate electrification in California.
By 2025 - it was suing the same state to block emissions rules.
That’s not just inconsistency. It undermines trust.
5/9
US 🇺🇸
In March 2026, Volvo backed efforts - via an industry body - to weaken national climate protections under the Clean Air Act.
This signals a shift from cooperation to confrontation.
4/9
On paper, Volvo says its lobbying aligns with the Paris Agreement.
In reality?
It has repeatedly worked against climate regulation in both the US and EU - directly and through industry groups.
3/9
Volvo is the world’s second largest truck manufacturer - with emissions roughly 5x higher than Sweden.
Meaning it has huge potential to drive the shift to electric transport.
But right now - it’s falling far short.

🚨 A new report by the New Weather Institute Sweden finds a significant gap between Volvo’s climate ambitions and its actions.
Instead of championing climate policy - the company is actively obstructing it. 🧵 1/9

Let’s be clear - fossil fuel ad bans aren’t a silver bullet.
Among other policies, we still need:
🔴 Policies to stop new fossil fuel projects
🔴 Massive investment in clean energy
But removing the polluter narrative pushed in ads is a key piece of the puzzle.
8/9
The discussion also highlights something most people don’t realise.
It’s not just about how many polluter ads exist - it's also about where they are placed.
The fossil fuel industry regularly advertises in Westminster station where policymakers can often be found.
7/9
Example. 👇
And, even if the impact on consumption isn’t immediate, the long-term effect matters.
Advertising tells us what is “normal" or "aspirational".
So, for a generation raised in a world without polluter ads, a "normal" lifestyle will be one without pollution.
6/9
Another common critique: “Would a fossil fuel ad ban even work?”
@bbcmarcosilva.bsky.social puts it simply:
If these ads didn’t help sustain the fossil fuel economy…
Why would they continue to spend millions on them? 🤔
5/9
Critics also push back on comparisons between fossil fuel ads and tobacco. 🚬
But, like tobacco, the fossil fuel industry is causing a public health crisis.
📊 A 2021 study found that fossil fuel pollution is linked to 1 in 5 premature deaths globally.
4/9
And while public confidence in polluting industries reduces, political confidence to take action grows.
Once cities prove that restricting fossil ads is possible, it opens the door to tackling the next frontier: mass media and digital advertising.
3/9
A common argument against the local fossil ad bans taking place across Europe is that most ads are now found online or in the media. 📺
But @annaholligan.bsky.social points out that local ad bans “weaken the fossil halo” - chipping away at the industry’s social license to operate.

The call for a ban on polluter advertising is being heard. ✊
