Good thread, thanks for sharing! Seems to me govs are totally sold on these big models. And so have a complete blind spot when it comes to small language models which enable this difference and plurality.

Same, occasionally…like today 😳
Of course they are in favour, just not in that particular case (and repeatedly)
I'm a broken record on this but the radicalisation and brain rot of Gen X/boomers is a massively under-appreciated problem
YOU BROUGHT A HOME NEXT TO TRAFALGAR SQUARE. THAT IS NOT A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBOURHOOD. HEAVEN HAS BEEN THERE SINCE 1979

The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they're the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesive-because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about "Western civilization," while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.
Really powerful, hopeful paragraph from the latest article in the Atlantic by @adamserwer.bsky.social
Haha! Yes my favourite approach to parenting!
But less so on public services, I’m an adult!
Stories of the NHS beating expectations.
They must be faxing each other
"The NHS" in this context means "three NHS trusts"
I’d not noticed this. I suppose there’s a lot of words to choose from which adds to the fun!
New article on AI note takers, attention & acceptable errors.
When AI is used in the NHS & healthcare systems to take notes the assumption is that doctors will review & check for errors. But this ignores human factors & the pressures. So what is acceptable?

This week, Brexit finally killed our family business. We cleared out our warehouse, handed back the keys, paid the final bills and said goodbye to our last employee.
What was once a thriving firm died a slow, sad death, all thanks to Farage, Johnson and the gullible idiots they conned. 1/18
I am not going to be able to latch onto the latest cool trend because several extremely clever people who I've known for years and respect immensely are currently producing very good work with AI. It would be more socially convenient if this wasn't true but it is.
That’s one hell of a cover…..
it's ridiculous that this "London has fallen" bullshit has been allowed to fester for so long.
The best time to deal with this was a few years ago, and the second best time is now
We hear the concerns about AI. Our goal is to use this technology to give people greater control, not to generate content. Attie uses AI to help you create custom feeds without having to know how to code.
Wtf, @attie.ai is #2 on the top total blocks on @clearsky.app, above even ICE (!) 🤯
Imagine hating a newly launched app for building custom feeds more than a modern age Gestapo that shoots people in the street or puts them in concentration camps… some people here really need to rethink some things
Bluesky's user base is truly determined to kill bluesky, one way or another. Mostly through active antipathy towards the company (which is very Old Twitter), and any change. Sadly I suspect we'll eventually succeed.
Also, bluesky's performative AI luddism is getting *very* old.
Think it’s possible but doesn’t if depend on how it’s signalled, by who and to which groups? On the signalling how do you easily show you didn’t use AI? From what I’ve seen there’s some “tells” but they aren’t glanceable and the tech might bridge those too.
And cross-dept learning would be a good idea too…
Sorry this continues to be the case. There are many of us that appreciate these informative posts and not needing to use x too.

While our American cousins take to the streets to protest against Tяump's authoritarianism on No Kings Day, we're marching in London to prevent his divisive politics being imported to the UK. I'll be playing a few songs in Whitehall around 2:30pm

Thanks! Yep makes sense. Just cynical investment can come without metrics & measures that reduce this to tickbox delivery not relational change and community building.
Thanks Rachel, great thread of thoughts and I’m about to read the article.
Just on the last point relational infrastructure- can the gov build it? Or perhaps the right question is: can the gov get out of the way so it can be built rapidly?
I think you last point in brackets is so important. The mindset and framing determines the aspiration, vision and (perhaps most importantly) limitations. The smartphone/app analogy has taken hold, imagine it’ll be AI inspired in the near future - and so we ignore the non-tech framing.
everyone’s discussing how financially stupid this is and they’re right but it’s also logistically stupid. zero way to charge foreigners and not locals without a hell of a lot of racism coming out in the wash
Ah 😞 and they have deep pockets so will take time to unfold I imagine
Feels substantial and important. Is there a chance of this being contested? Or is it enough to necessitate changes from the companies?
