I remember this! I had no idea it was a Canadian song! And my God, this clip is just dripping with cheesiness.

I hope you show up at book signings in a suit and wielding a cigarette. (You also need to come out of nowhere at every event.) Congrats!

Happy birthday, Tim Curry! I think this is the only thing I've written about him (as a professional). I had so much fun writing this one.

This is the nastiest (and worst) of the Death Wish movies, especially if you're watching the uncut version. Look for Laurence Fishburne in here.

Banana! And I hope that the Seattle team would have been called the Seattle Sleepless.

"What's Up," by 4 Non Blondes, one of the worst and most obnoxious songs ever written and recorded. That opening guitar riff will be playing as I'm slowly descending into Hell after I die. Glad the 90's were not my decade.

84. Driving Miss Daisy (1989)
In a fit of delusion, 90-year-old Jewish former schoolteacher Daisy Werthan (Jessica Tandy) reaches out for her Black chauffeur, Hoke Colburn (Morgan Freeman), and professes that he’s her BFF. Until this point, Miss Daisy has been all sorts of mean, accusing him of stealing a 33-cent can of salmon and cruelly prohibiting him from seeing Martin Luther King speak at a dinner she’s attending. That it takes the loss of her sanity for Miss Daisy to finally say something heartfelt to her decades-long caretaker is an irony completely lost on Driving Miss Daisy. This is because writer Alfred Uhry never clarifies why Hoke would accept Miss Daisy’s word as truth. At best, Hoke feels sorry for Miss Daisy’s deteriorating mental state; at worst, Stockholm syndrome keeps him in the orbit of someone who could only appreciate him when she wasn’t lucid. Either way, he’s stuck with her out of obligation, like a freed slave who stays on the plantation to help his master. The film never realizes its racial harmony is really racial subservience because it’s too busy patting itself on the back. Driving Miss Daisy is the cinematic equivalent of an ally paying nothing but lip service. Odie Henderson

I'm TRYNA take you to the sto', Miss Daisy!

I got some flack for writing this blurb as part of Slant's best picture rankings. I'd have it much lower than they did, but folks said I was too mean to this piece of ish. The original draft was far more vicious.

This is from one of my seminar slides:

“The evidence is that a good idea, good direction and good performances…have been sacrificed here to the Hollywood caution of treating the question of race with continuing evasion of more delicate issues and impolite, beaming generalities.” -from Bosley Crowther's NYT review of THE WORLD, THE FLESH AND THE DEVIL.

So, Belafonte stayed. But for ODDS, he demanded full control of the film--who directed, who got cast, the screenplay, etc. Through HarBel Productions and help from his colleagues on the film like Robert Wise, he got what he wanted. By the way, Bosley Crowther said this about THE WORLD, THE FLESH...

Stevens and Belafonte were pissed about this, and he says that the film would have really elevated her career had it been done as originally planned. Belafonte walked off the movie, but I think it was John Cassavetes who told him "if you do that, you know who they'll blame. t'll ruin your career."

He said that MGM looked at the dailies and thought there was too much "heat" between Belafonte and Inger Stevens. So the studio immediately demanded the screenplay eliminate any overt idea of attraction. I did a seminar on ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW at the Coolidge in Boston where I talked about this.

In his book, Belafonte talks about the studio's extreme interference in changing the screenplay, and how that made him take control on the 1st film he produced, ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW. THE WORLD ET AL. got a nice remake in 1985's THE QUIET EARTH.

I would definitely need those women if I sang this, because I could never do this dance to save my life. I told John Waters this was the only dance in HAIRSPRAY I couldn't do.

I've been saying this for years after watching some of these early clips of soul/R&B songs being performed. If I ever get a chance to sing on TV, I want a crew of rhythmless White women with ironed hair behind me dancing their asses off while simultaneously being off beat.
