Probably forgotten now are the many documentaries that preceded the Auschwitz coverage the year before. These programmes were significant in explaining how Holocaust history was developing and including the access to Soviet archives where many Auschwitz SS records were held.

In the evening the BBC continued its coverage with survivors, while Sky covered Elie Wiesel’s speech before the gas chambers of Birkenau.

In 1995 BBC and Sky joined forces to maximise the coverage of the anniversary. In the morning, BBC coverage relied on experts for public interpretation. They included Richard Evans, who later became an expert witness in the Irving Trial.

Today marks the 150 years since the birth of Sir Winston Churchill. There are those ,who seem to increasingly reject nuance, and attempt to denigrate his legacy. Churchill had flaws, but his strengths provided the bulwark against Nazism and tyranny. He was a great man.
