The Panther Lake laptop chip on 18A would allow Intel to capture the healthy margin that the company used to achieve by manufacturing the chips it designed.
Only a small percentage of the Panther Lake chips printed via 18A have been good enough to make available to customers at this point.
18A is a crucial manufacturing process because it hoped success there would attract external foundry customers.
Intel has struggled with its crucial 18A manufacturing process and yields have increased to 10% this summer from 5% late last year, according to sources. Defect density is 3X what the industry standard is to begin high-volume production, which is slated for this year. Details π

Intel has a new CEO and it's Lip-Bu Tan! He was such an obvious front-runner that we assumed the more time that passed, the less likely it would be him. And yet! @bcantrill.bsky.social and I were joined by @chernandburn.bsky.social to discuss youtu.be/-sYvYYSxz2Y
