I think a lot about how relationship maps can drive design and play. Here's a map for a six-character game that includes lines of affinity and also primary motivations proximal to characters. Everyone but the king has at least one one-sided relationship. Everyone knows exactly what to do.

It's kind of like when even mid list novelist could make a living, and now only a very small percent can get away with not having a day job. Not a viable "career" but something a small number of privileged and passionate artists will do anyway.

Exactly this. I know several indie devs getting loans against their houses to try to get something out the door. Very scary.

The global environment is totally different now. Access to sufficient capital is totally different now (as in, not available). Consumer spending is shifting. IMO, there will likely be permanent atrophy of the space.

So my bigger question is, where will so many of us go? What will we all do?

I love indie video games. My favorite game that I ever worked on was with a tiny indie team and I still think the game itself absolutely slaps. Proud to stand behind that work.

But. I get the feeling that the indie revolution is not going to save us*. Not this time.
