On understanding the political philosophical differences dividing the world: “It is easy for me to imagine that the next great division of the world will be between people who wish to live as creatures and people who wish to live as machines.” Wendell Berry In ‘Life is a Miracle’, Wendell Berry urges us to begin a "conversation out of school." Believing we are on a course of arrogant and dangerous behavior in science and other intellectual disciplines, this proclamation against modern superstition recommends a shift in priorities and goals. Berry observes, "it is clearly bad for the sciences and the arts to be divided into 'two cultures.' It is bad for scientists to be working without a sense of obligation to cultural tradition. It is bad for artists and scholars in the humanities to be working without a sense of obligation to the world beyond the artifacts of culture." They must be the subjects of one complex conversation. ### Read a sample: “Life Is a Miracle: An Essay Against Modern Superstition” Wendell Berry read.amazon.com Of course the problem lies in the details that account for... I just got mugged for a slice of pizza (now got mugged for a cigarette) I was at Little Caesars and was waiting for the bus while carrying the pizza, and this woman walked up to me and said she wanted a pizza... I told her that I'm running low on money and that I can't share and she started getting aggressive and said I'm going to get "f**ked up" if I don't give her a pizza... So I gave her a slice then walked away to go to the next bus stop down the street.

Car novice question: Why does my new car not perform as well as its predecessor Here are the specs of each model on Parker's guide: Old car: ### Ford Focus Hatchback 1.6 Zetec 5d specs & dimensions | Parkers Find all specs on the Ford Focus Hatchback 1.6 Zetec 5d, from fuel efficiency and top speed, to dimensions data and more. www.parkers.co.uk 'New' car: ### Vauxhall Astra Hatchback 1.6i 16V Design 5d specs & dimensions | Parkers Find all specs on the Vauxhall Astra Hatchback 1.6i 16V Design 5d, from fuel efficiency and top speed, to dimensions data and more. www.parkers.co.uk There simply isn't any way that the newer car has the same power behind its acceleration than the old car. Can someone point out what I should have been paying attention to?

How to get a 10 ream box of printer paper without getting reamed Last 10 ream box I got was at Costco, Richmond, CA. Asking there recently they said they no longer sell them there. I go into a local Office Depot (Berkeley, CA) yesterday and they featured a 10 ream box for ~$38, but only if you pay ~$50 for a year membership in their "discount" program and a rep tries to convince me to join, "you'll save blah blah." I say I can go ~7 years or more on a 10 ream box and there's no way I'm going to buy ~$30 worth of office supplies in the next year. To buy a 10 ream box without joining, it would be over $60 plus tax, so I leave without my printer paper. Searching just now online I only get confusing info about where and how to get my next 10 ream box. My printer is a HL-5470dw printer. Used to jam frequently for unknown reasons but the last year or two it pretty much stopped jamming. Not a bad B&W printer. Costco Business in Hayward's (16.1 miles from me in Berkeley, CA) answering system doesn't let me access a human being to ask if they have 10... Read more

Selling laptop - best way to wipe SSD? It is a 1 TB Patriot P220 from 2022 or so. I have a USB docking station I can use to connect the 2.5" SSD into my main PC but I would not know which tool to use to wipe said SSD. Wiping a HDD was easy enough (though slow) but I believe SSDs work differently when it comes to how they should be wiped. Patriot itself appear to have no software. Any ideas?

RESOLVED __ SEE LATEST POST: Laptop sold to a friend with original owner's "administrator" user account -- needs to be tweaked My friend Linda -- not a computer nerd -- is on a shoe-string budget. She bought a Lenovo laptop from somebody named "Larry" at the senior center. Larry's account persists on the system. Her account does not seem to be an "administrator" account, and I cannot figure out how to change it. But we can still log on with Larry's account, and then log off and log on again with Linda's. This problem seemed to affect the options for installing software, or when we want to "run as administrator". We actually got the drivers and software installed for a perfectly-working flatbed Canon scanner released in 2007 -- all works fine. But I want to purge Larry's account and upgrade Linda's to "administrator". I've been through similar hoops on my network with 5 systems. Here's my idea and my plan. I think we should log on as "Larry". Then -- we should ADD a new account for Linda with an account name not too different from her existing account. And in the process of adding an account... Why reactionaries are taking over the world. ### History Is Running Backwards Why reactionaries are taking over the world www.theatlantic.com I don’t know how to deal with the pay wall. I am a subscriber here, but the content of the article I found to be thoughtfully inspiring despite the fact that I have prior negative feelings about the author. He is basically making a case for knowing your enemy. For many years now I have tried to suggest that Liberals are their own enemies because they do not understand where conservatives are coming from and can’t therefore mount popularly appealing counter arguments. Of course this is my opinion but this piece mirrors many of the things I believe Brooks has illuminated that concur with my views. If you are interested in why radicals are taking over the world perhaps you can read it or suggest how others can. Thanks.

Dental Work... Bridge vs. Implant So earlier in the year I cracked a root-canal'd tooth while eating, and ended up getting it pulled three months ago. It's a first upper molar. My treatment plan suggested an implant and possible sinus lift, so I was all ready for that. I had a follow-up appointment last week and everything is healing nicely. After reviewing the latest 3-D scan, the periodontist said the sinus lift would be necessary and fairly complicated. My sinus cavity dips down quite a bit just around that one tooth (lucky, huh?), so roughly half of the implant would extend into my sinus cavity. He said we can make it work, but it's going to be pretty invasive and not an absolute guarantee that it would work out. He recommended a bridge rather than an implant, especially since I do have good hygiene and wouldn't slip on keeping it clean. I'm still thinking through it, and I plan on getting a second opinion, but I was wondering if anyone here went through the same thing. My major concern with the bridge... Read more

Network File Sharing Access problem -- AGAIN! THE SCENARIO We've had a home LAN among three family members since I returned to California 25 years ago. At some point, I replaced a Windows Home Server installation with Windows Server 2012 Essentials. I maintained this for my brother and elderly Moms until they died between 2022 and 2023. I had to recycle their computers, and re-evaluated my "digital fortress". I insisted on keeping two client systems -- twins essentially -- as recommended by another friend on the East Coast and former neighbor. A third system -- using the same processor and chipset as the other two -- was deployed as a "Media PC" feeding my Sony Bravia and AVR, and it was also a backup file server. I would synch important personal business files regularly with this third system. I also have a laptop, and I use it the same way. When I updated two of these systems (including the Media box) to Windows 11, it was a provisional upgrade, since the processors just precede Coffee Lake -- the first of... Read more

Older Toshiba no video Out of the blue, my older Toshiba Laptop that I rarely use lost it's video. Black screen even during the boot stage. I even tried the HD output (which I've had never used IIRC). The only difference is the Boot screen did come up (if you can call it that) as a green 4x3 screen full of noise as in a very poor signal, then it went black. the HDMI TV sees a connection, but nothing. I removed the SSD & the 2 memory chips and re-seated them, but no difference (which didn't surprise me). I disconnected the power feed (the battery was not connected) for a couple of minutes and reconnected it, but no change. Can I assume the video chipset is toast?? FWIW, It's running W7 Pro x64 if that matters. I rarely use it, probably it's been 3-4 months last time it was used with no issue. Model is Satellite L775D S-7226

Brands that have gone to... pot https://forums.anandtech.com/thread...robably-dont-care-about.2467343/post-41595715 The ensuing discussion about backpack quality largely going to pot thanks to corporate buyouts / profit chasing inspired me to start this thread, with two more "buyer beware" anecdotes: Hush Puppies - I wear shoes for my business, and I may do anywhere between 20 minutes and 2 hours of walking per day (more likely to be 20 minutes). In the >20 years that I've been self-employed, I've obviously gone through plenty of pairs of shoes, and on average I'd say a pair has lasted me 3-4 years (including past pairs of Hush Puppies). Fast forward to last year, I found a pair of (genuine) Hush Puppies shoes for £50 UKP (which is cheaper than average for shoes in the UK, nowadays I'd expect to pay >£60), and I managed to wear a hole in the soles in about 3 months. The shop I bought them from said that shoe shops don't legally have warranty-type obligations, but as a gesture... Read more

A little modivation for anyone attempting to get in shape. My local Nutrishop has a few fitness challenges throughout the year. I'm not huge but I'm definitely not in shape at all. I entered the New Years challenge, it was biweekly weigh ins for 6 weeks. There were around 60 people when it started, and 25 when it finished. The goals were body fat lost and muscle added. They have some fancy $22k Inbody machine. I don't know how accurate it is, but I'm assuming for the price the results are at least close to real numbers. I got #1 in my age group (35+) and #3 overall. They had 2 age groups and each age group had 1 for males and 1 for females. I was 1 spot away from winning a 3 day cruise, I got a gift card, 80 bucks and Nutriguide DNA testing that's $299. I don't know anyone else who entered so I don't know how hard the others tried, but I'm assuming at least some were pushing themselves. So to finish 1st in my group and almost win overall felt good. I paid $25 to enter the paid part so I could maybe win the cruise. Since I got #1 for... Read more

2nd D5 pump died I've had a 2nd D5 pump die on me in the space of 3 yrs 🙁 1st one lasted just over a year, 2nd one lasted about 2 yrs (both vario versions). Googling around, it seems it's better to run the pump at 50%+ power. I didn't make this connection until the 2nd one failed. Both of these pumps were mounted in a XSPC 5.25 bay-res. I was running them at low speed because they were just too noisy otherwise. I had been running around 20-30%. Both times the impeller ended up contacting the curved surface on the inside of the pump, I'm guessing because the bearing seat surface wore down (not sure how that happens when running lower speed) and the impeller was no longer centered. I was running straight distilled water + silver kill coil (been doing that for the past 20+ yrs on all my builds). CPU block is full copper (no nickel plating) and rad is xspc rx240 (brass I think). I have another D5 (pwm) running at 75% for 3+ yrs now and that's been fine. And another D5 (vario) I had running... Read more

Adding soft start to new HVAC system Has anyone added one of these to their HVAC system? Outside of the installation cost (was quoted $700), seems like something to good to have, mainly less shock/wear and tear and should use less electricity when then system starts up. My system is about 18 months old and the quote was from the vendor who installed the system (which was a new build). Any other pros/cons to consider?

Creating custom Windows 11 ISOs with 3rd party drivers installed I'm wondering if I create a custom Windows 11 ISO with software called Winhance and include the drivers in the self-created ISO, will that also include the software associated with the drivers, for example, if I included the Nvidia drivers for my RTX 4090, will the Nvidia Control Panel also be included in the ISO I created or will I have to download and install the Nvidia Control Panel separately?

Poll: Prediction, the final agreement between the US and Iran will resemble 75-95% of the JCPOA Will we discover the final agreement be substantially similar to the JCPOA, the original Iran nuclear deal put in place by Barack Obama. Trump ripped it up because it was an accomplishment by Obama. Meanwhile we started a war that has cost the lives of US troops, Iranian, school children and cost us $1-2B/day. The same money that will explode the debt and not allow us to fund crucial social programs. https://www.unicef.org/press-releases/brutality-war-measured-childrens-lives-hostilities-escalate-iran The JCPOA limited enrichment to 3.65%. Allowed for IAEA inspections. During the 3 years the IAEA, US intelligence agencies and the NRA all stated the agreement was working.

San Diego Folks: Looking for Things to Do I'm being sent to a conference mid-July in SD and will be bringing the fam since they'll be on summer break. I'm doing some research on things for the wife and daughter to do while I'm attending the conference during the day. We'll be staying in the Mission Valley area so it should be pretty easy for them to get around. We'll be down there for the whole week, but travel day will be Friday so they basically have 4 days to check stuff out. I was thinking one day Sea World, one day the Zoo (I might duck out of the conference to go with them to the zoo), one day check out the UC since we're there and my daughter is a Sophomore. Maybe the same day check out Coronado? The conference will be at the SD Convention Center, anything cool to check out in that area?

Understanding the evolution of Trumps self destruction…. It is little understood, and everything I am about to say is my opinion, it is little understood that when you near confronting truth you face the issues created by paradox. The experience of truth realization involves reconciling apparent opposites at an intuitive flash or altered level of conscious experience, an ah ha moment, etc. Let’s start with the ego. It is there to save us from endless awareness of conscious pain that if experienced from its point of origin would have killed us had we not shut it off. Had we not suppressed our traumatic experiences they would not have ended. By being co-opted and spirit broken was the only way to survived. We became what we at first resisted traded our real love of life for ego greatness. We sought acceptance and praise at the cost of the joy of being and have never ever really known such joy again except in dribs and drabs. The result of such loss is longing for forbidden fruit and that can lead to violence and perversion. We are... Read more

Just got summoned for jury duty for the first time, and I'm nervous (Moderator DAPUNISHER gave me permission to make this thread) I thought in order to be summoned for jury duty you had to register to vote... which is why I never registered to vote.... BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO DO JURY DUTY! But I looked it up on Google and ChatGPT and they both said you can be summoned even if you didn't register to vote. I'm a little scared, I'm very sensitive to negativity which is why I don't watch the news, because it's full of negativity, and I think it'll be stressful having to "decide" wether or not someone should go to jail. I'm also worried whichever I choose I'm going to get backlash, if I say "guilty" I'm going to get backlash, if I say "not guilty" I'm going to get backlash.

Need help with graphics problem I have a computer at the office that stays on because it is setup to receive faxes. The problem is that if the power goes out which it does frequently when it is restarted it boots but the screen flashes so it is unusable. It has done this several times and I have been able to get it to boot to a stable desktop but I am not sure what the problem is and what I did to get it up and running except rebooting multiple times. Once it has booted to desktop it works fine. Any suggestions
